    Better things to do

I live in San Diego and used to go to TJ and La Mission. I'm not going to Suger Coat things but tell you very bluntly - - I no longer go to Mx because of the violence and crime. Much of TJ (for the average tourist) is a bunch of shops selling blankets, clothing and trinkets, plus bars, sex shows. Of course, there are more wholesome things but the beggers and trinket shops are still quite present. If the violence subsides, maybe I may go back. But even when things were safer, it was like visiting a 3rd world country. Sad and not a vacation highlight.

There are many BETTER things to do in San Diego - - the zoo, Balboa park, the USS Midway, the Wild Animal park, Sea World, Lego Land, drive up to Disneyland or Universal Studios, etc.

If you are visitors, MOST rental car companies don't allow you to travel to Mexico. So, if you crash their car, you pay $20,000 or whatever. If you are driving your own car, you need to have Mex. insurance. If you decide to risk it and drive a rental car in Mex w/o insurance and you have an accident, your vacation will turn into a significant life-changing experience. You WILL be thrown into a Mex. jail until you can sort things out and make financial restitution. I personally know people who ended up in jail for several weeks because of a traffic accident. My advice - - DON'T RISK IT! There are too many alternatives that are better and more enjoyable.

We also live in Southern California and no longer go to Tijuana. The violence makes it no longer worth the risk. We still go to Cancun, though!
