Minnesota Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association (MBOTMA) puts on one of the (reportedly) largest bluegrass festivals. It was held this year Aug 12-15. They also do a winter festival in March at one of the large hotels. I attended a couple of the the summer festivals years ago, but haven't seen much good bluegrass in a while. DW and I don't share the same feeling about bluegrass.

Now that's a lineup, not all is bluegrass. Doc Watson has a big festival every year in honor of his son in Wilkesboro. It has become really really big. I sure would love to go to it. Sounds like fun. Shaggy

Doc's son, Merle, was such a good musician, too. How heartbreaking him dying the way he did in that tractor accident. We saw Doc perform live in Franklin, Indiana, at a little theatre and what a treat it was. It's so amazing how he picks that guitar (most people would never know he's blind unless they saw him live).

He is a true icon of blue grass. I have met him several times and he is a very humble man. Yes, it was terrible about his son but the festival is in his memory and keeps the music & son's memory alive. shaggy

I am not familiar with the bluegrass artists, but there are so many great acts listed -- PATTI SMITH- I was shocked to see her name.

My friends in town are trying to talk us out of this (too zooey?) and into seeing Arcade Fire later in the week instead. I'm sure I can see them in New York.

Too bad Faust hasn't been around, he would prob know what this fest is like and whether it's worthwhile. I imagine the "free" aspect does make it pretty crazy crowded.

I'd love to see Emmylou. It's been at least 20 years and she's usually a high dollar ticket. Probably close to that long since I've seen Doc Watson, also.

I hate the ticket prices for concerts these days. I'm just too cheap to go. Too many years of working in radio (lots of comps) and then 25 years married to a musician ("I'm with the band"). It's hard for me to cough up the money for a ticket.

I never worked in radio, but otw I could have written that. Fortunately, I don't like large indoor venues anyway, so it's easy to refuse to pay big prices for halfway decent seats. I miss some acts I might otherwise enjoy, but I can live with that. And I do enjoy outdoor shows, cheap lawn seats, etc...

Last month I forgot myself and went to see Jack Johnson at Madison Square Garden. Got tix on the day they went onsale so didn't pay overmuch, thought it was worth it since I really love his music. I was quickly reminded how much I HATE HATE HATE the Garden, so I am over that, for good (someone may have to remind me at some point, but not for a long long time). We left before the encore(s), walking down the endless flights of stopped escalators covered in sticky beer.

Ok, they've got the day by day listing up, but specific times/stages not announced til fest week. RT on Saturday, not sure if we'll make that SO stoked for Patti Smith, Sharon Jones,Emmylou, Martin Sexton, Earl Scruggs, Shelby Lynn, Joan Baez on Sunday (gonna have to make some tough choices that day)! Who would be a must for you? Keeping in mind that Patti Smith is #1 on my list, it's been many years since I've seen her live. MANY. Big fan. Yeah, I know she's out there
