Sometimes the fog gets too gloomy and we head inland just to get warm.
Either you were unlucky or your definition of gloom is not the same. I have been up and down the CA Central Coast in August several times and have not seen much in the way of gloom. I lived in SE Florida for 8 years and was very happy to return back to the weather in California.

The last two years we hit fog frequently and last year 3 days where it did not lift at all. However, we enjoyed it because of the radical change in climate from NE Florida. I agree with you about SE FL. The climate is great there only during the winter months. We have about 7 months of great weather and 2 months of transition weather and 3 months of oppressive heat and humidity. I go to the beach quite a bit during the hot months and that makes the day time more bearable. Nights are usually very comfortable.
