  • Why does Carlsbad Inn charge 10% tax + daily resort fee?

I was looking at booking an exchange for someone through GPX and the Alert says that there is a daily fee + 10% Tax. None of the other Carlsbad resorts have that. Why?

Exactly! When I was checking out California resorts, Carlsbad came up, but when I saw all the extra fees, i took a pass. These fees are ridiculous.

Someone should look into the tax charge if it's just being charged by that one resort.

          Is the fee excessive?

Many resorts, even Wilderness Club @ Big Cedar, have fees to pay for the use of other amenities at their site.

It's excessive in that all the other resorts under the same management, even in the same city, don't have the 10% tax on top of the daily resort fee. They all have a daily resort fee, but only Carlsbad Inn also states there is a 10% tax.

A tax presumes it is something being collected for the gov't, not the resort itself.

I wonder if downtown Carlsbad has some redevelopment district or something like that?

I called the front desk to ask how much the taxes would be. She said the resort fee is taxed. So, the $14/day is really $ 15.40/day. I forgot to ask why.

Do you get anything other than the right to stay there for $15.40/day?

It is not in the Resort Directory, but is online:

                    Resort Fees
Resort amenities fee is 15.40 U.S. dollars.
                    Fee is charged per day.

                      It's worded differently in GPX.

                      Alert Notes:

This resort has as 24-hour check-in desk and charges a service fee of $14 per day plus 10% tax. The resort and its grounds are NON-SMOKING areas. Please be advised renovations on the units and building are set to begin on Sept. 8, 2013, and could go through the week of Nov. 17, 2013

I believe it is to cover internet and parking. Maybe they offer other stuff that I don't know about.

Their sister resort, Carlsbad Seapointe Resort, charges $14./day for internet, newspaper and parking. They always have coffee and tea in the lobby all day and night. AND, they serve you a glass of champagne while you check in. There is free wine a couple nights each week. So, the resort fee isn't the end of the world. Oh, yeah, they also have a free hot breakfast on Mondays. Not a TS pitch. They just tell you about all the activities that are going on at the resort during the week.

Bottom line is, people will pay the extra fees just to be able to stay near the beach.

It's a nice place. I'd pay the $15 a day to stay there.

I would never stay there- extra fees and total smoking prohiibition. Hell, next year they will probably prohibit alcohol and sex.

Hotel tax (TOT) is 10 % in Carlsbad...but I agree with you. Why is CI charging it and Seapointe, et al, not? I'm an owner and have stayed as an exchanger and rented through Resortime in my name but as a a room for my Mother. I tell them to waive all that crap...and they do

I think all of California prohibits smoking except for the good stuff.
