Rental Cars - they are concerned about luggage on Public Transportation and are thinking about renting a car for San Francisco. Any recommendations on places to stay if you have a car and how much will they have to pay for parking?

They could take a taxi from/to the airport and still come out way ahead vs renting a car and dealing with parking.
As far as where to stay, Union Square is great for shopping and the urban experience. The marina is great for walks along the bay and more natural vistas.

As a former resident of the city I have to speak up for Nob Hill, plenty to do there for the discerning traveler, if you want "touristy" then by all means stay down at the wharf.

The cable car museum is not to be missed, and on the other end of the scale there is the vibrator museum.

Nearby on Telegraph Hill - Coit Tower is fascinating if you enjoy art, the WPA murals. Closed until spring though. There is a California's Gold episode where Huell visited.

Don't get me wrong, I love Nob Hill. I just don't think of it as "touristy".....thank goodness.
