Can anyone tell me how far Coronado is from the Santa Ana airport? (our flights are already booked so we can't really change airports) And how far it is to Laguna Beach?

We've had a couple ongoing searches for Laguna area for mid-Oct and the Coronado one just came up for the exact dates we need. However, we've been wanting to go back to Laguna so my wife can do more surfing. Is it too far away? Are there other good surf teaching shops in the Coronado area?

Should we take it or hold off hoping for something closer like Capistrano or San Clemente?

    Any advice would be great!

Coronado is about 1:45 to 2+ hours from Santa Ana John Wayne Orange County Airport. Laguna Beach is about 1.5. This is all without traffic. Traffic can add substantial time depending on the time you travel.

Coronado is pretty far....and I am not aware of surf spots on the island. I would advise north San Diego County starting from Del Mar, Solona Beach, Carlsbad, Oceanside, San Clemente, Laguna, and Newport Beach. All of these areas have surfing spots nearby.

Carlsbad/Oceanside is about 30 to 45 mins from the SNA airport without traffic....They also have some great surf spots as well. I recommend you stay in that area.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping it was closer but didn't think so. With everyone saying Oct is such a great time to go to CA, I'm concerned we won't get another exchange, being only 3 months away.

If I declline the exchange match, will we be penalized as "having met the match requirements?" It's through SFX. Should I ask Mark?

If worse comes to worse.....there are many surf spots down in San Diego....I just am not familiar with them. If you wife has her heart set on Laguna Beach area then it will be a long drive. But there are other places further south...you will just need to look into them. Look at the threads for beaches in the Cali forum....there may be more info there.

Ask Mark and see what he says about SFX policy. I am not discouraging you.....Coronado Beach Resort is nice and you will like it.....just don't plan to commute up to Orange County every day.

San Diego Surf Map at Surfline.com

Look at the surf map link above......see the red star San Diego....well Coronado is actually that peninsula which runs up and forms San Diego bay area.....Imperial Beach to the south.

My college roommate was from Coronado Island

Not certain if I'm doing this right as this is my first post.
My college roommate was from Coronado Island, and I know she spent a lot of time at the beach. I thought they did a little surfing there, but now I'm not too certain. We have been to Coronado Beach Club on two occasions. It's a small resort across from the Historic Del Coronado Hotel. We really liked it. There's no pool, but one of the nicest beaches you'll ever see. (Resort not on beach, however.) You have guest privileges at a very fancy resort about 2 miles away which has all sorts of pools, spas, restaurants, etc. The rooms on the street side of Coronado B.C. can be kind of noisy.

We own at Capri by the Sea on Mission Beach, and that seems to be a favoriate spot for surfers along with Oceanside. We always see surfers at Mission Beach, winter, summer, spring or fall.

We used to live near Santa Cruz---now that is surfing territory!

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Coronado's going to work out for us. It's just a bit too far to drive as we've got other things planned besides surfing around the Capistrano area.

Oh well. That means that SFX has got an exchange for mid-Oct available to whoever can get it.

              Thanks for the feedback.
