My wife and I are back home (in Florida) after spending 2 months on our new (35 year old) boat I bought it to use as our second home (vacation home) in California I would have used timeshares but the no dogs rule doesnt work for us
So yes the bathroom situation takes a little getting used to, we have 2 electric flush heads and a shower stall , but only a 90 gal holding tank and a 6 gal hot water heater. So we didnt use the shower on the boat at all, we walked to the marina showers, and we pumped the holding tank once a week. (I did it myself, but there is a service that will do it pretty cheap) Other than that inconvenience its like having a small waterfront condo.

And how fab that you opted for a boat as a vacation home!!!

Just an update and thanks to ronparise for the boatbnb suggestion. I was able to get in touch with the rental agent and we're going to stay on a beautiful sailboat in the marina and couldn't be happier. So while it may not have fit my initial (and perhaps naive) request for beach/ocean, it's a wonderful outside-the-box idea and we're super excited!!!
And thanks to all for your input. I will try to remember to report back.

The friends who provided us with the restaurant list for San Diego, stay in their boat when they're in San Diego. Not sure if it's the same marina (don't know how many there are) but I'm guessing that several of the restaurants on the list are not far from there.Luanne

There is another restaurant on Shelter Island you should check out that is literally steps from the marina. It's the Bali Hai. Been there for years and is getting pretty good reviews. I loved going there as a kid, it was on our "must" list each time we visited. It was kind of a tacky, terrible, but in a wonderful way, type of place.

Update: We checked in today, O> M> G... this Boat BnB may be the most amazing tip I've ever gotten here on the 4ms, and that is not an easy feat.
RonParise, I honestly can't thank you enough. We're on a gorgeous vintage sailboat, lots of beautiful teak, cozy but comfy with great sleeping setup and perfect for the four of us. DD is sleeping up top bc it's so beautiful (maybe a tad chilly, but for us NYers it's hard to come inside). Bali Hai was lovely, we had an incredible view and perfectly good food. Polynesian theme fit the mood, and I always love some kitsch. Beware of bachelorette parties, but the short walk along the shore to get back to our boat can't be beat. Really, just SO special, I fear the fam will be disappointed when we leave to check into our spacious timeshare. Oh, and I told the kids that we were staying in a "small motel room" for the first couple of nights... they didn't complain but also weren't exactly excited.... and they didn't catch on until we were heading down the dock!

Im glad its working out so well.. Im always afraid to give recommendations and tips especially when I havent had the experience myself, and because things I might enjoy, you might not
Heres a question for you and others that might visit San Diego.. Would you consider chartering a motor yacht for a day cruise of the harbor or a little whale watching or perhaps a sunset cruise. It aint cheap one guy I know (a licensed captain) charges (for up to 6 guests) $695 for 2 hours and $975 for3. Im thinking of adding my boat to his fleet
