  • Fairfield (Canterbury?) in San Francisco

Fairfield bought the (Best Western) Canterbury Hotel this summer and they apparently plan to renovate it into timeshare. I've read of a tentative opening in 2008.

Does anyone here with familiarity with either Fairfield or with the situation in San Francisco have any info to add to this? Does anyone know if they will have studios, 1BRs or larger units?

    TIA!

All I know is what I read on the internet...

Here's a link to the story about the purchase:

        Canterbury Hotel/Fairfield renovation

        Lisa P.

I stayed at the Canterbury 2-3 times many years ago while attending sales meetings for a publisher I worked for. It was really a comfortable place, with nicely appointed rooms and in a great location 3 blocks from Union Square, the heart of San Francisco's downtown. I guess I would have called it a "boutique" hotel.

I don't think any of the rooms at that time were more than hotel rooms, though there could have been interconnected suites. Fairfield will likely have to gut the place and, if they are going to put in cooking facilities, probably combine two or three existing rooms to make it work.

But, it couldn't be in a better location, close to cable car lines, shopping (Macy's), funky bars, nice restaurants.

I'll bet that Fairfield will want a pretty penny to purchase there. Fortunately, I have family and friends in San Francisco, and we can use a free "bonus week" staying there with them anytime.

I am going to drive by the Canterbury hotel 690 Market St on Monday. Josie just told me they are doing some major construction on that corner. I will let you know what I see and hear.

I went by the Canterbury hotel; there was a big wooden fence around the building. There was a large crane and they were doing major construction. I looked through the fence; the whole building was gutted out. I would think when the construction is finished the Canterbury hotel will look very nice.

690 Market is going to be a Ritz-Carlton according to the article. I've been gone from SF for a long time, but that just didn't sound like the right addy for the Canterbury, so I looked it up. Its actually at 750 Sutter St, which is Sutter between Taylor and Jones. [the rest is not for Ken, who knows this, but for Lisa and others] The top end of Union Square is Geary and Powell. The shops of Union Square are a block lower, on O'Farrell mostly. Sutter is two blocks uphill from Geary. Taylor is two blocks west of Powell, so you are about four or five blocks from Union Square, if you want to count true. In San Francisco that is still a small walk.

There are buses on Sutter, which runs one way west, and Post, which is one way towards Market. Walking back to Stockton you can get a bus into Chinatown or even walk...its not that far. If you are going shopping, I'd suggest you walk down to Union Square, down to Market Street, and then take a bus back up the hill.

                    Fern,
You were right the Canterbury is on 750 Sutter St.
I went by there today and it was all locked up. There was a security guard there, he told me construction will start in one month and it will open in 2008. he did not know how many time shares there will be, but he did say some will be timeshares rooms and part of it will be a hotel.
