There are only a couple of TS in San Diego; most of the TS in the area are in the area about 30 minutes or more outside the city.

    The top things to do.
    1. The Zoo and the rest of the park around the zoo.
    2. Sea world
    3. Coronado
    4. The aircraft carrier in the harbor is great
    5. The point over looking the bay is wonderful.
    6. Visit LaJolla

Visit the many websites which will give you an overview of the area.

    Great place to visit. Enjoy
    Bill

If we didn't have kids, I might try the one in Del Mar-Villa L'Auberge or something like that. If noise in the middle of the night is an issue, be careful of the resorts with train tracks behind them (like Seapoint-although very nice and they do have jacuzzi tubs and I think all or almost all have ocean views). We recently bought Grand Pacific Palisades-also really nice (no train behind units) but only half ocean, half park view. Excellent resort-but I think better for families (we have 3 kids). Even so, if it was just me and my husband I would stay there no problem-just maybe not my first choice. I was told that Sun to Sun units are all ocean view, and Sat to Sat park view. Oh yeah-we stayed at the one in Coronado a cuple years ago, very nice, smaller units, but very well done-they would be good for you also-mini kitchens, if you don't mind. (No pool-who cares-you said January, just walk accross the street to the Hotel Del Coronado for a nice walk on the beach.)

        Also maybe Carlsbad Inn

Forgot to mention Carlsbad Inn-nice units, nice downtown location (safe, comfortable-Carlsbad is nice in general), near beach and you can walk to shops etc. Little small (hence we didn't buy here-family of 5, we'd go crazy) but for a couple this would be great-and the train tracks are a block or two away. View will depend upon unit-which is set. (You buy a fixed unit here.)

Also, you might want to check out Wave Crest-I haven't even been there to tour, but read something nice about it. (Although the writer didn't mention for couples or families-which to me, is a big difference.)

          Good morning Paul,
We own at Lawrence Welk in Escondido and traded into it several times before buying. We love it there both with and without our kids. Just the right distance away from San Diego for an easy drive. One of the top rated resorts for good reason. We like the older part much better than the new but we are simple people that like to relax. Love being on the golf course for the beauty of it.

Yes, as stated above, the Carlsbad Inn or the other Grand Pacific resorts in the area might work for you.

You could leave your car parked and take the nearby coaster train. It's a great way to get around. The bus system is easy and cheap to use once you get there and right across the street from where the train lets you off.

Fairfield has one right in the gaslamp district, ( Harbour light) but I was glad I stayed outside of San Diego.

Hi, Paul, and welcome! My first thought when I read your note was, "You're trying to get an exchange in San Diego area next Jan., and you haven't requested yet?"
Maybe I misread the note, but that's only 4 months away. I sincerely wish you lots of luck. If you DO get a choice, I also vote for Lawrence Welk Resort Villas,
but there are some good suggestions here, and also much to learn.
I certainly hope RCI fulfills your request, but if you're relying on a sales person's tale that it will be easy to get any exchange you want, anytime.....

As 50ish and 60ish Steve and I really enjoy San Diego. I don't have any input on where to stay, but in San Diego itself our favorite is still the San Diego Zoo. Also, if you have a chance, get over to Coronado and at least walk through the Hotel Del. What a gorgeous old resort.

We lived in San Diego for several years and now live just 60 miles from downtown San Diego. We frequently play tourist in San Diego. Seeing as you are visiting in January, being near the beach should not be a high priority. Weather will play a part in what you can do. In January the weather is pretty iffy.

I would consider the Gaslamp Plaza Suites in downtown San Diego. I am an owner there and have stayed there several times on bonus time The resort is in a great location in the Gaslamp area. Downtown San Diego is very nice and quite safe. It is great if you enjoy walking. You can walk to the harbor, Seaport Village, etc. One trip I always like is to take the Coronado ferry from the foot of Broadway to Coronado Island. You can then walk to the Hotel Del Coronado which is a great place to visit. It is about a mile from the ferry to the Hotel Del Coronado. You can take a taxi if you don't like to walk. I also recommend eating at Miguel's Cocina for good Mexican food. It is located in a courtyard across from the Hotel Del.

Let me know if want any detailed info.
