  • California Timeshare Owners/Voters: Interval Warning About Prop 88

I posted a similar post to this one as a non-political advisory on TUG, and I think it's an appropriate post in the California, rather than the political, area here. It concerns your annual costs of owning a California timeshare.

Interval International has sent a warning out to Timeshare owners about California Proposition 88, on the ballot next Tuesday.

I'm not going to discuss the merits of this proposition here. I think that needs to be done in the Political Forum, so please discuss the merits/downsides of the Proposition there. I do not want California timeshare owners to miss out on this advisory because of political agendas.

I read Proposition 88. It places a $50 annual property tax, per taxable parcel, on all California Real Estate, with the stated purpose of the tax being to help the California Educational System.

For California timeshare owners, that means that a $50 annual tax will be imposed per timeshare week for all timeshare owners, as timeshares in California are subject to separate property tax bills per week, thus making a single week ownership a "parcel" under the tax laws, and under Proposition 88.

So, decide whether you support this or not, and make sure you vote whichever way you decide best.

For you non-California owners of California timeshares, I'm sorry. It looks like you may be subject to the whims of California voters, with no say one way or another. Whether this is constitutional or not remains to be seen.

We already got a big tax increase in Hawaii too plus we are taxed for occupying our own timeshare unit too. Since we cannot vote in Hawaii, we are double taxed and you will see that other states will try to do this too, if they can get away with it.

Big Government always needs more money. If they would use it wisely, I wouldn't object so much but the money is often used unwisely or wasted! They don't know what living in a budget means because they know where to get more.

I had to think for a minute about whether this applied to me

        Emmy,
I agree that waste is the number one reason why taxes are so "easily" levied or increased by lazy governments...however, I would add, that corporate profit outstrips the pace of increases that are hurting citizens.

In Arizona alone, every single utility or service company has either increased their rates or are asking for rate increases that range anywhere from 8% to 200%. Of course, that will end up being added to Maint fees too! UGH!
Life is short, live it with this awareness.

Katiemack, with regular companies, you have the choice not to buy their products and buy from the competition instead. However, this is not possible with some of the utility companies or the local telephone company either so I have no solution for that.

This is why there should be competition as that is the main reason too why prices will stay in check. The fluctuations will be because of supply and demand and because of inflation. We all know the reason for that.

My wife and I voted last week and we both voted NO on Prop 88.
