I drove thru Nappa Valley today and I am going to Monterey on Thursday. I have an educational conference there.
I vote for Monterey as I like it better than Nappa Valley. There is more to do and the scenery is better. Of course, if you are a wine and food freak, Napa is the place to be. I just think Monterey is a better location.

Today I drove from Davis California thur Nappa, Sonoma, and into Santa Rosa. It was a great drive and there were TONS of vineyards, manisons, bed and breakfasts, and small quaint restaurants.
I am now in Heraldsburg and I have never even heard of this place. I decided to crash for the night here and the downtown shops and restaurants are wonderful. Tomorrow I am off to explore the coast and drive south to San Francisco.
I still prefer Monterey, but if you like wine tours, small town shope, etc. Nappa is a cool area.

Take the kids to Carmel or Monterey and the California coast as they will prefer that. California has really a lot to offer in sight-seeing as well as the National Parks.

PS. I now read that you are from Florida so you have no mountains at all but we have plenty of them.

I went to Bodega Bay and then into Muir Woods.
Let me tell everyone now....Muir Woods is only 30 minutes from the Golden Gate Bride and is one of the MOST beautiful areas in the entore WORLD I have ever been to and I have traveled a lot. The 200 foot redwood treas and creak, moss, was stunning.
I then went south thru San Fran and I am now staying for the night in Pacifica on the beach.
I would have met you for dinner as I stopped for dinner at some place called "??? Hawaiian BBQ" that was just a fast food place that was pretty good.
I have a conference in Monterey on Friday and Saturday and take a red-eye flight home via Oakland.
I will be back in San Fran at the "W" hotel in two weeks, if you want to meet. Just send me a PM.
I have met with BocaBum99 a few times in Boca Raton.
