  • Which timeshare near San Diego?

I will be going to visit my sister and her young children (4 under 10) sometime during the summer of '08. My BIL is in the Navy and they are being relocated there. They will probably live somewhere in Southern San Diego.

Does anyone have a timeshare reccommendation for me? It can be RCI or II. It will be for me, my wife and our three children (9, 6, and 4). It doesn't necessarily have to be the closest to my sister because we plan on doing all the touristy things like SD Zoo, Sea World, Disneyland, Legoland etc. We will do these all together.

So in terms of location, unit size and pool for the kids where should I be focusing?

    Thanks for your help.

PS I'm from New York and am not familiar with the San Diego area at all. Although I have heard that the traffic can really become unbearable.

As an RCI member,My preference/options was to stay a little outside of San Diego. For me,I thought it was a good choice. Quieter, scenic, etc.

I stayed at the carlsbad Inn. I liked it a lot.Nice village setting. If you wanted to let the car sit, you and the kids could hop on the Coaster train right down the street and head on in to downtown San Diego. The train is clean and inexpensive and scenic and the companion bus system at the station is easy and cheap.
Legoland is right near the resorts.
There are several choices with GP Resorts. Also Oceanside and Solana Beach has resorts.

It is a little bit of a drive to San Diego but I know of no better timeshare. It also puts you closer to LA for Disney, Universal, etc. but is a few hours drive because of traffic. We have owned at Welk for several years after trading to there several times. It is in Escondido, right off the freeway.

Escondido during the summer can be quite hot.

The most important questions is what resorts are available.

We've stayed at the Carlsbad Inn and liked it. It is older, and there is a small residential street with beachfront houses, and then a stairway going down to the beach.

We toured Carlsbad Seapoint, not far away, when it was fairly new. It is across the highway and a fairly decent hike over to the beach.

I'm not trying to cut the others shorts by just mentioning a few. There are other nice resorts in SOCAL, but summer is a tough trade so, like I said, what you see is more important than what you want.

We had a Carlsbad couple at one of the Branson get-togethers last month.

Thanks again. I'll probably stay in a 1BR unit at the Coronado Beach Resort. They don't have their own pool, but guests have access to Loews Coronado Bay Resort's 3 pools, hot tubs, basketball/tennis courts etc. just 4 miles away.

Not to deter you because I loved the Coronado Beach Resort and it's location, but those units are small. You said there are five of you. I'm not even sure there is sleeping room for five in a one-bedroom. Be sure to check the occupancy and number of beds. I stayed in a one bedroom with my mom and sister a few years back. There was no door, just a pull curtain type of thing for the bedroom. Partial, and I mean very partial kitchen.

Edited to add that per the RCI Directory, the maximum occupancy for a one-bedroom is 4/privacy 2. If you arrive with 5 I'd sure hate to see you turned away.

Thank you Luanne. I am aware how small the unit will be and have seen the photos from their website. However, my sister will have a house nearby so I will not be forced to squeeze everyone in. I just figured that it will provide us with a little extra sleeping room and a lot of privacy. You know someplace close to get away and recharge the batteries.

I actually found a 1BR there for July 27th that I put on hold, but I fully intend to confirm it tonight. I don't anticipate being lucky enough to snag a 2BR.

If you don't mind I'd really like to take advantage of your knowledge since you've stayed there. If you happen to have any pictures to email that would be even better.

                  I really appreciate your insight!

Does your sister know she's babysitting your three kids while you and your wife enjoy the 'privacy' at Coronado Beach?

Well, if all 5 of you don't have to sleep there you should be fine. I don't have any pictures of the Coronado Beach Hotel, but I do have some of the Hotel Del Coronado (across the street). Steve and I stayed there a few years ago for our anniversary. If you want to see those let me know.

Glitter, If you knew my sister (she's actually my twin but we're complete opposites) then you would know that she would actually be the one trying to leave me with all the kids at her house while she runs off to the Coronado Beach Club.

Yes Luanne, I'd love to see any pictures that you have of the area. You can either email me or pm them.

Thank you. It's so much better to view pictures from someone that has been there rather than those just from the resort's website. I'll share mine August 2008!

I'm so happy that I was able to get this exchange this morning but now I can't wait to go. Oh well, that's how the game is played.

I let a unit at the Coronado Beach Hotel slip by earlier. I was kind of playing around and couldn't decide if I should grab it or not. By the time I decided to take it.............gone. But, I was able to get a studio in La Jolla right on the water. So, I feel somewhat saved. This is for May, 2007 and it wasn't even something I was looking for. Just trolling.
