  • What's closer to Laguna Beach - Newport or Dana Point?

I'm doing some backup planning to our trip for next year to Laguna Beach. Which TS is closer - Mariott NCV or Riviera Beach & Spa/Shores? We've stayed at both the Capistrano Surfside Inn and Riviera. We found that to be an easy daily drive to the Laguna Beach area. How's it like from the NCV?

On the same front, I've become familiar with some of the golf courses around Dana Point which are reasonably priced, especially if booking last minute. What about around Laguna Beach or driving from NCV area?

I've never been to NCV. While it is a Mariott, I've heard read some posts about it becoming a bit tired. Should we go back to what we know or try NCV? We should be able to trade in.

Didn't mention OY that IIRC there are more slowdowns between Laguna and Dana Point than there are between Newport, especially the south end where NCV is, and Laguna. Traffic seemed worse on the PCH as one moved south. We own at NCV and have driven the PCH many times...

Edited to add that, additionally, because NCV is south of Newport, completely out of town, the distance to Laguna is actually quite short.

Last time we were at NCV, there was a free daily shuttle to Laguna Beach, in addition to Fashion Island in Newport Beach...

Yes, the Marriott NCV resort is very close and the shuttle is convenient too as parking is hard to do most of the time.

You might also consider San Clemente. Cute town. Dear Old goes to the barber there. it's not far from Laguna and no train noise.

I posted lots of SC weeks in EX-OPS this AM.

Lawren, thanks. I was also thinking about SC Cove as well. I've been looking for availability there the past couple months but have seen limited availability for the times we want to go. I've seen the SC Inn but wasn't sure of the quality (seen mixed reviews). The train issue doesn't bother us.

OK then Capiustrano Beach is only about 15 miles away.

SCI seems to be well reviewed on Trip Advisor

Those will most likely be in my search for summer 2008. I am WAY overdue to visit Dear Old and my familiar haunts. Not to mention Jack in the Box.

I'm an owner at Riviera Shores and love the 1 bds with great ocean views. Rivera Beach has some 2 bedrooms with ocean views but all of the 2 bds at the Riviera Shores have no view at all. BUT NCV is truly a step above either of the Riviera resorts. Even a NCV unit without a view is better than the Riviera resorts. If you're looking at a 2 bd unit there is no comparison, the NCV is the better choice.

Both resorts are almost the same distant so pick the one you can get.

I see you had a nice "SoCal" ebay win the other day.

                    LS came through!

Thanks for all the replies but we were able to get a unit at Laguna Surf (thanks to Emmy's linking me up with someone that could clear away some obstacles we were facing)! Now DW can walk down to the beach for surfing and I can go golfing.

Speaking of which, anyone recommend any not so pricy but good value golf courses that I should check out?

Hi Bruce, yes that was a good deal. I just couldn't resist. Besides, we seem to be going down to SoCal on a more regular basis now so that purchase broadens our options and removes some exchange limitations. I had to go EOY though because the MFs are just adding up!

                      Have a great Christmas!
