Although this is true, there are so many golf course in PS that having half closed doesn't limit your choices very much. Many clubs will have 2 course and only one will be closed while they overseed the other.

    PD in Oct is great!!

Does anyone know how far these resorts are from San Diego? I ask because I think I can one of these two, pretty easily. Also, any preference? Thanks!!

These resorts are north of SD but not too far. As close to SD as the Four Seasons but more inland.

If you want golf though I'd reconsider Palm Desert.

    Good Luck

Welk is fine but I would recommend the Coast.

Riviera Oaks is in Romona and too far away from the area IMHO.

        Angela,

Is it just you and DH?
Gaslamp Plaza is probably available with Trading Places if that is the case.
It doesn't get more "San Diego" than that.

Golf courses throughout both the San Diego and Palm Springs areas close for reseeding every year in the October/November timeframe. Generally they close for 3 or 4 weeks at a time. However there are so many courses in both areas that they are always careful to overlap the seeding schedule so that many, many courses remain open during this period. Several websites give the overseeding schedules but I doubt you will find much of a schedule this early.

If your primary purpose is to play golf, I would recommend the Palm Springs area. The PS area has more golf courses that the larger San Diego area and they are much more concentrated so travel and traffic will not be a problem. Plus ... October is an ideal time weather wise.

You can review PS area golf courses at the following websites. You may be able to contact individual golf courses by email to ask abbout their overseeding schedule:

          Palm Desert, California Golf Courses

Palm Springs Golf, Palm Springs Golf Courses,Palm Springs California

            Lawren,

I'm not really sure, at this point. If we had gone to Palm Springs, I think that my DH would have asked one of his golfing buddies to join us. I can get a two bdrm at the Westin. They are just sitting there.......The weather, along with the golf course situation, is probably why.

I'm still haven't really discussed San Diego with my DH. So, I really don't know if we would be going alone. No kids, tho.

If it is going to be just the two of us, I will definetly look into trading places. Although, I just got an AC, and I could have used it to get the Westin, or the other two San Diego locations.

I stayed at the Westin Mission Hills and LOVED it - if it weren't for the great Spa at the JW, I would definitely ALWAYS stay there.
I am actually looking forward to returning to MH and trying their spa.

I sent my parents to Mission Hillsa few years ago the last week in Sept 2005 - they enjoyed it but it was hot. They golf at home all the time so didn't golf when they went there.

Are you talking about downtown San Diego or proximity to golf courses? Lawrence Welk is about 45 minutes from San Diego assuming no traffic problems. Traffic can be horrendous on I-15. LW is pretty isolated but is quite close to several golf courses. The weather in Escondido in October should be great. I live just 30 minutes from Lawrence Welk. LW is a nice resort.

Ramona is more isolated than Escondido.

If golf is your primary reason then I would recommend Palm Springs. We lived in San Diego for 25 years and now live between San Diego and Palm Springs. The weather in October is generally very good regardless of where you choose. That is a generality as occasionally we have had some pretty bad weather in October such as in October, 2004. The coast will be cooler in the day but warmer at night. Personally I prefer the warmer drier weather of the inland areas.

I own at Gaslamp Plaza Suites and it is a great location if you wish to be in downtown San Diego but not too great for proximity to golf courses.

If it were just dh and I traveling I'd take Gaslamp in a heartbeat. I love San Diego.

We often play tourist in San Diego and stay at the Gaslamp Plaza Suites on bonus time for a couple of nights at a time. We will be doing that several times in April and May to take in the Padres games.

Luanne....I am leaning heavily toward San Diego....Now, I just have to talk my DH in to going. He had his heart set on a 'Golf Vacation.'

It sounds like Gaslamp would be a good choice!

PS.....I had talked my DH into taking an extra week vacation. This is extremely difficult for him to accomplish, and it was not easy getting him to agree.... I think the only reason that he eventually said yes, was because he was going to get to play lots of golf. So, now he has given me the OK to book a week in October, but he sees his golf, slowly slipping away. I feel badly, and am a little torn on where to go.

We're going to San Diego (actually La Jolla) in May. Didn't take much to twist dh's arm. Of course the trip for us is much easier, plane ride of a little over an hour.

                            Ah Angela,
I am going to recant my previous statement about Palm Springs in October. I think you would both enjoy your time there. PS is golf mecca and if DH agreed and expected golf-then PS is the place to go. Even if some courses are closed-as stated in this thread-the overlapping schedule will work. They can't close it all down-LOL! As you know we just returned from FS Aviara and I know you would love this resort-but it's not going to be the type of vacation your DH wants unless he likes driving/the beach/etc. Don't get me wrong-I LOVE San Diego and the beach-but if he wants to golf-take him to PS. There would be many things for you to do as well when you are not golfing. The weather would be great and the pools would be nice.

The resorts in San Diego and the surrounding areas don't always compare to Marriotts or Westins or Four Seasons-this doesn't make much difference to us...in fact I would have much liked staying at Carlsbad Inn as opposed to the Four Seasons-but that's just me. I know you own "better" resorts and
maybe you want a "better" experience coming all this way from NY. I don't know-I am just guessing. I just feel really protective right now and want you to have the experience you expect and will enjoy...does that make sense? You are "our Ang" and do so much for us that you deserve the best we can offer

Angela would also like PS, shopping, Fab restaurants, shopping, golf courses and did I say shopping?

                              PALM SPRINGS
Palm Springs spreads across California's Coachella Valley -the ultimate mirage in an American desert. It's hard to know what's real and what's not in this odd patch of green that someone other than God created from dust in the middle of Nowhere, U.S.A.

The money 's real enough to smell -- almost. It shouts at you from the boutiques along El Paseo. It purrs past you in $230,000 Rolls-Royce convertibles on Palm Canyon Drive. It waves at you from country clubs whose membership lists read like a "Who's who in the West."

People come here to be seen, and a vacation in one of the nine or so townships that make up Palm Springs offers that opportunity. You can't walk along the boulevards during its mild winters without noticing The Beautiful People.

What is there to do in Palm Springs? You can challenge one of its 100 courses in the golf capital of the world, play tennis on one of 600 courts or swim in one of 30,000 pools.

Then there's shopping. You can spend time trying on clothing owned by the stars, including items from the Ginger Rogers Private Collection, at Celebrity Seconds on N. Palm Canyon Drive, or hunt for fashions and accessories designed by local Palm Springs Desert Resorts artists at Frenchy's on the same street, or negotiate for a vintage Rolls-Royce, Bentley or Jaguar at Exotic Motor Cars on East Ramon Road.

You can even shop for a new face if you're tired of the, er, hand nature dealt you. The Yellow Pages feature more plastic surgeons than pediatricians -- about 30 at last count. But maybe you just want someplace to stay someplace quintessentially Palm Springs. Try the Ingleside Inn, breathe in its great Hollywood past and dine at its restaurant, Mervyn's, all Californian Victorian with chandeliers, lace tablecloths, soft lighting, pink jackets and pink cocktails -- restaurant as theater.

                              | Welcome To The Ingleside Inn |

Tracy & Pat....Alright, alright, you've talked me back into Palm Springs. It's all Pa't fault, she used that magic word..... 'shopping!' Anyway, DH really wants a golf vacation, and he deserves one.

This is my new plan.....Palm Springs in October. I will try and get the end of October if it's available. Then I'm putting in a request for spring, Four Seasons in Carlsbad. If I don't get it, I'll probably just grab one.....Keep your fingers & toes crossed.

OK....I'm going onto II, and seeing what's there, at the moment!
