  • Tahoe restaurant (and spa?) reco's?

    Oops, forgot to ask earlier...

Staying in South Lake Tahoe, looking for nice restaurants, and any favorite massage therapists/places/spas...

    Thanks!!

eta: any fun 'must do' stuff for teen boys other than snowboarding also appreciated...

No recommendations, Glitter, except have a fun vacation with your boys and SO. Yes, only one recommendation and that is, don't forget to drive around the lake! It takes time but it is worth it. JMHO.

First glimpse of Lake Tahoe, NV.

            Try Harrahs top floor

One of our favorite at South Shore is the buffet at the top of Harrahs. Has a very nice buffet lunch and dinner and the view is wonderful. Heading west from south shore is a horse stable for that kind of riding experience. Since the snow is pretty lean right now, day hikes might be something to consider. Emerald Bay's Eagle Falls has a pretty hike that is only about a mile or so roundtrip. In that same area is a much steeper hike to Vikingsholm, which I wouldn't attempt if there is any snow or ice. Vikingsholm is a custom craftsmen made home at the water level of Emerald Bay. Further north on Hwy 89 along the west shore is the Ehrmann Mansion that is another custom made home of the turn of the century. Fanny Bridge in Tahoe City is a kick to stop to see and feed the very large Macinaw fish. Right there at the bridge is also a bridgetender museum with some of the local Tahoe history information. Go north on 89 towards Truckee is Squaw Valley, where they had winter Olympics in the 60's. Old Truckee is a cool place to visit with old historic buildings and a nice variety of shops. Ruby's is a fun place to eat there, which has an old bicycle shop decor. They not have parking fees where you can buy a ticket out of a dispenser using cash or plastic. You can take hwy 267 back to north shore. When you come to North Shore Blvd, turn right and go about 1-2 blocks and Lanza's italian restaurant is on the right side for a nice dinner(no lunch). Go east on North Shore Blvd., you'll get back into Nevada with a couple of the casinos and Incline Village. Going back along the east shore will have a scenic turnout or two and then there's the short tunnel at Cave Rock. After Incline Village, you'll pass the remains of the Ponderosa Ranch remains from the Bonanza show popularity. The tourist stop has been closed and sold, but there are still some western remnants still around, visible to the east from the highway. If you are able to get out for a bit more of a drive, Nevada's capitol, Carson City has a great silver display museum. Not far from Carson City is the really cool old prospecting town of Virginia City. Then there's the ghost town of Bodie off of hwy 395. If they fish, there are fishing tours out onto the lake. Not sure about spa's. The Fantasy Inn near the Sunterra Tahoe Resort probably won't have the type of massage service you would be interested in. There are some reputable massage therapists that come to your suite, and there might be something at the casino's, too. If it's cold enough, there might be ice skating at the southshore Timberlodge complex. Have fun! Gary

We ate at Ruby's a few years ago and liked it. I am hoping to get up there again but not sure if we'll make it this trip. Now you have me very curious about the massages at the Fantasy Inn...

We did try the buffet at Harrah's on Saturday night, but it was very crowded. There was even a wedding party there...

We had a decent meal last night here at the Ridge Tahoe, and tonight we had an awesome meal at Naked Fish; really great fresh sushi.

Tomorrow I am hoping to head up to Incline Village and will look for the Ponderosa ranch. I loved Bonanza!

              and more restaurant recommendations???

"Y" is the intersection of CA-50 and CA-89. check out this map. Their ginger ice cream is REALLY good!

Never been to the bronx. Here is a bit about myself.

Pat, feel free to move these to appropriate thread as you like.

When we visit South Lake Tahoe, we usually like to take it easy and spend the time relaxing at our favorite resort, WorldMark SouthShore. When we are not at the resort swimming, hot tubbing, or playing pool/pingpong in the game room, we are either spending time at the lake (short walk to Nevada beach from the resort) or driving around the lake -or- riding our bikes at or near Camp Richardson.

Here is information about one of our favorite bike trails:
This is the trail that parallels Hwy. 89 through Camp Richardson and doesn't really have a name other than "bike trail." To reach the trailhead take Hwy. 50 west and at the intersection with Hwy. 89 take a right. You'll pass several restaurants, a coffee shop and two bike rental stands. Both offer mountain and street bikes when open.

The trailhead comes right after Hwy. 89 narrows to two lanes and is on the right. There's a dirt trail starting on the other side of Hwy. 89 which is less used. If you're biking from the rental areas try to use the paved bike lanes; the dirt ones can be badly rutted.
...neat Forest Service building where you can buy maps and guides to the area. A short walk from the center is the newly remodeled Stream Profile Exhibit, where glass windows on Taylor Creek give you a view of what it's like for the fish swimming there.
Farther along you'll come to Baldwin Beach, another fee for cars but free to bikers and hikers. This is another lovely sand beach, much smaller than Pope but with basic facilities.
Driving further on 89 towards North Lake Tahoe is also highly recommended. It is a beautiful drive when there is no snow ... and you have access to more trails there.

                          Few other suggestions:
                          • Take a day trip to Genoa - an old town
                          • Carson City - I think there is a railroad museum there. Old town.

Pat, the Naked Fish was great, we ate there twice but you have to like sushi.

The other restaurant we liked a lot was on the Kingsbury Grade, not too far up, on the left if you are heading up from the lake. I think it was called the Chart House, or something like that.

And the place that was referred to as Ruby's earlier in the thread, is actually Rosies, it's in Tahoe City. A nice stop for the day you drive around the lake. And did I already mention that you must check out Sand Harbor? That won't be too far north up the lake from Zephyr Cove.

For cheap good eats, there is a really good Wolfgang Puck Express in the Heavenly Village by the Marriott. There is also a restaurant that people really like called Fire and Ice, but the "open uncooked meat and fish" thing bothered me so we didn't stay (you make your own plate of uncooked food to bring to the center to be hotgrilled).

Thanks kapish and Glitter....great info for my upcoming trip!

kapish, I am laughing as I read your bio.....because I was thinking your name was (where is Big Frank to help me!) Italian.... I know Italian people say 'kapish' or something that sounds like that and it means 'understand'...

As in "When you leave the resort, the restaurant will be on your left, kapish?"
I am SURE that is not the spelling....but....oh well, the laugh is on me!

And you have a good looking non-Italian family.
