  • And a hello from South Lake Tahoe

Long travel day, but no glitches. It's pretty warm here, but Heavenly is still pretty much open, so the boys are hitting an extreme snowboarding camp run by some pro boarder tomorrow. We are staying at Heavenly Townhouses tonight (nice 3 bedroom), since the boys have to be at the California Lodge in the morning, but we're moving to the Ridge Tahoe tomorrow since it looks like there's more snow on the Nevada side, and I don't like the big black ants crawling around here... I don't mind an ant or two in the kitchen now and then, but I found one in the bedroom upstairs, too

The lake is beautiful, we had a nice ride down from Reno. More later in the week

    HI!!

Glad you made it ok. Looking forward to your review of Ridge Tahoe-since that is where we are staying this summer...I know it's probably better for a ski vacation. I love traveling vicariously with you....I often feel like I should lend you my screen name....

        Black ants in the bedroom.

Well, at least you have another timeshare to go to....That's what I like about you, you always seem to have a back-up.

I'm glad that everything went smoothly, and that the lake, and the area, are beautiful. Have a great time, and stay in tough!!!!

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

          Hi Avery,
Thanks for checking in and keeping everyone informed. Glad the travel went OK.
I missed the whole Ridge Tahoe thing, not sure why you have 2 (and don't waste time explaining), but you know ,that would work for me---
one t/s for THEM (that would be the family) and one for ME .
Enjoy the week, glad the snow is good.
Looking forward to hearing about Tahoe from you, last time there was in the 70s.. (pre t/s of course. We stayed in a motel right on the Lake. Not only was the area/view gorgeous, but they forgot to charge us for the second night (we charged it, bill never came). Only time that has EVER happened.

You will have to take plenty of pictures for us. I have never been to that area and would like to go someday but probably in the summer.

BUGS I can't abide bugs. Glad you are moving....keep in touch!

              Hi Avery,
I am glad to here that you made it to Tahoe ok.
Like I said earlier on the Nevada side it has better skiing, your boys can ski from Nevada to California side and back gain and that is fun.

Black ants in the bedroom not a good sign, you don’t want to get eating alive on vacation.

Let us know how everything goes.

I think I have moved beyond "cadet..."

But we are now settled in at the Ridge Tahoe and thrilled we moved. At the moment, each of my tired teens is in a separate hot tub (though the lock-off one is a soaking tub, no jets...).

I must disagree about this being better for a ski vacation. I think it's a great spot for the summer, it is absolutely gorgeous up here at the top of the Kingsbury Grade... it's really not all that convenient for skiing... it's ok, but not ski/in/out by any means.

I will post a review later, but our unit is huge and very nice. The resort is a bit spread out and you can't really walk from one building to another, but there is an on demand shuttle that should work out fine. I had a delicious lunch at the deli here, and we're going to try dinner here, too.

We are in the Cascades building, the unit is larger than the one we were originally assigned in the Plaza building. But the first one smelled really bad, turns out someone was smoking in it and whatever they used to cover it up, well the combo was deadly... Stressy, be quiet... The view from the Plaza unit was better, more mountains/valley, but the view here is just lovely and the unit is nicer. Plaza would be fine, though, too. I will try to look at some others, but they're full at the moment so maybe later in the week..

Thanks G - I have always wondered about those resorts - they are always poping up on my II searches and the area is so beautiful I imagine Late May thru Oct 1 would be nice there. We went to reno on a business trip several tears ago and spent the day touring the area. That ride over the mountain is SCAREY but spectacular - on the way back we went thru CA to go back to Reno - I also drove the other way to Pyramid Lake....we have a big country with LOTS to do and see.

Avery, you sure have your stories and experiences too. The Tahoe Ridge looks a beautiful resort to me. I looked it up. How is the snow boarding or skiing for the boys?

Don't forget to take some pictures and share them with us.

A scary drive? I alway thougt it was pretty tame except for the fact I kept wanting to look at the scenery rather than the road.

We've stayed at the Ridge twice. Both times in the summer. We've really enjoyed our stays up there. The last time we were there the Plaza units were maybe a little dated but well kept and clean. Had to evict a mouse once (kill actually) but that was better than the time they had to evict a bear from one of the buildings. We've found it's not unusual to run into a racoon in the garge from time to time either.

Both times we've exchanged into the Ridge we've been assigned the Plaza building. Not sure if that SOP for the Ridge but the Plaza has always been pleasant enough for us. We're thinking about going back to Tahoe next year but the wife thinks she wants to try someplace else. Maybe the Hyatt on the north shore or the Marriott down at lake level. We'll see what is available when/if we decide to go back.

I hope you enjoy your time on the mountain. Last time we were there in late May we had snow made it sort of pretty since we don't usually get snow in KS in late May.

The Hyatt in Incline Village has a fantastic view over the lake and in the winter you see the snowcapped mountains from the CA side. It is so beautiful around Lake Tahoe.

The road is not too bad, though one should pay attention... in bad weather it would no doubt get tricky up here on the Kingsbury grade...

Emmy, the boys had a great day snowboarding, though they rated conditions somewhere around 6 or 7 out of 10 at the higher elevations. At the lower part of the mountain it was pretty dismal. I had to pick DH up early, he gave up. But DS15 found this snowboard camp and signed up before we arrived, so the boys spent the day with them and had a great time. Unfortunately it was the last day, but it sounds like an awesome experience for teens, even better for college kids since they bunk together and have evening activities (though likely drinking, the drinking age here appears to be 18).

I am taking a few pictures, but the boys are taking the camera tomorrow when I plan to drive north to Incline Village... perhaps they will forget it again

The Hyatt is on my list of places to look at, but I wonder about all these beaches... does the water ever get warm?

The Marriott looks beautiful and is right in the heart of town; looks they are responsible for the gentrification of an otherwise seedy-ish area. I wonder if there is road noise from the units?

I don't think the lake will ever get too warm but we were wimps and still are, Glitter. We used to spend many short vacations here but we never ever went in the water but we enjoyed the private two beaches that we belonged to. They were part of our community. Incline is still our favorite place around the lake.

I don't know about the road noise at the Marriott. It is a pretty busy intersection there but you have the ski lift next to you and you can't beat that.

I am glad your boys enjoy their activities.
