Fire eases on Calif. resort island - U.S. Life - MSNBC.com

Officials said the wildfire, ignited Saturday by lightning, had grown so rapidly that after six days it already rivaled a fire that has scorched 116,480 acres, or 182 square miles, of southeastern Georgia forest and swampland since April 16 — the state’s largest wildfire on record.

Sounds like they may get this undercontrol before it gets into Avalon.

Over 3800 people have been evacuated.

I think we had a shot of that lighting here last night. The thunder was so loud that all the car alarms were in tune.

Catalina Island is so beautiful and we love to go there so we are constantly looking at this local blog to see what is going on. My SO found some very scary pictures but I can't find them.

Catalina Island will no longer look the same after this big fire has been extinguished. Really sad. I loved the tall trees where we used to walk but they were burning, I saw in one of the pictures.

This blog also followed the big Griffith Park fire. It will be a very bad year for wild fires in CA but other states have also horrible fires, especially FL and GA. It has been a strange winter.

We have only actually gone and stayed on Catalina once but the island holds a special place in my heart. I will never forget my first time visiting Laguna many, many years ago and first seeing her at sunset.

Yes, but there is a little more than these few houses shown here. Avalon City is only one mile square as Catalina Island is mostly wilderness area and will stay that way, thank goodness.

This album here shows quite a few pictures of the little city and harbor. I just googled for it.
