Fire report
I'm checking the local news right now. They seem to have the fire under control now. Everything is very smokey but they expect full containment by Tuesday. There are hundreds of evacuees staying in South Lake Tahoe. The main highways are open but 89 around the lake is still closed. The legitimate object of Government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done but cannot do at all or cannot do so well for themselves”- Lincoln

I cancelled our trip to WorldMark South Shore planned for this weekend (6/29 - 7/1). Here is what our own "StressCadet", who is currently staying at the Ridge Tahoe, had to say:Hello from Lake Tahoe!
The fire is everything you have heard it is. If you have respiratory problems-please stay home. We are at Ridge Tahoe up the Kingsbury Grade-so it's not as bad here but there is smoke and haze everywhere. 50 is closed at Stateline by the Casinos and again at Emerald Bay. Wind is predicted for the next four days with a lake wind advisory today. It's not going to help a bit. I only have a short time on this computer as I don't have a laptop so I just wanted to check in and let Manoj know-I'm glad he was able to cancel his trip. You can't even see across the lake in places-it's also best to just let the firefighters do their job without clogging up the roads. God Bless Em...having recently been through a fire at home...I feel for everyone here especially those who have lost their homes.
Take care all....I'll check back in when I can.WorldMark Owners - Take back our club! |Email me at ts4ms@kapeesh.com as it is easier for me to respond than Private Messages. | Exchanges:Disney's Old Key West (Orlando), Four Seasons Aviara (Carlsbad, CA), Marriott Timber Lodge (Tahoe), Tahiti Resort & HGVC/Strip (Las Vegas), Wyndham Flagstaff, Star Island Resort (Kissimmee) & Pono Kai (Kauai). I am not sure of the accuracy of that.
We are not planning to go, but others may feel very very comfortable going there.WorldMark Owners - Take back our club! |Email me at ts4ms@kapeesh.com as it is easier for me to respond than Private Messages. | Exchanges:Disney's Old Key West (Orlando), Four Seasons Aviara (Carlsbad, CA), Marriott Timber Lodge (Tahoe), Tahiti Resort & HGVC/Strip (Las Vegas), Wyndham Flagstaff, Star Island Resort (Kissimmee) & Pono Kai (Kauai). Tourism dollars can be regained over time, lives cannot. I do hope folks who can do so, stay away. Smoke and the particulates can be really difficult to deal with, even if you don't have any lung conditions.
The west is so dry, a fire can become devastating so fast....if it is possible to postpone or reschedule, I would do so.
We saw the amazing abilities of the crews who attacked the fires in our area and we know how wonderfully skilled they are....they are truly remarkable men and women. God bless them.Life is short, live it with this awareness.

I'm home from The Ridge Tahoe...we left a day early because we are leaving again Sunday for Sedona.
Kapish, that was perfectly fine to post my comments. I only had a limited time on that computer and I can never keep my thoughts straight when I am under pressure
The fire is/was 70 % contained when we left this morning. The air was clearing up and you can now see across the lake. The roads were beginning to be opened up....in the beginning you could not even go from the Ridge to say, the Marriott without encountering a road block. We just stayed East and North side. The day I posted that-ash was falling at WM South Shore and everywhere else.
While the fire is expected to be fully contained soon, my personal opinion is to hold off on visiting. There is still much work to be done with clean up and housing those who have lost their homes. Many businesses are affected as well with employees needing to be with their families and loved ones. We were told at the only dinner we ate outside the condo that they were unable to serve any cocktails because the bartender was away taking care of his family. Just an example.
Yes, they need tourism dollars...but what they really need is donations. As always, when something like this happens...cash is king...it can serve so many purposes. The Red Cross is accepting donations for those who are so inclined.
I too have recently been through a wildfire...that came several feet from my home in March of this year. Way too early for fire season...it's a dry year for California. I can't praise the firefighters and community members enough. They saved our home.
Hope this helps...if you have any specific questions....just ask and I will do my best to answer.

Glad you are safe Stresscadet and Kapish was able to cancel - I agree that it is best to stay away for a few weeks while things are sorted out for the rescue workers and displaced.
I still plan on visiting in Sept - just looking at airfare and where to fly into now......

StressCadet,
Thanks for the first-hand info!!! This is very helpful to anyone planning on visiting, in the near future. I'm glad that you are home safely, and I think Kapish has made the right decision.
Enjoy Sedona!!!Angela
If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.
