edit - The prices I quoted below are for your dates over July 4th weekend

I know we are usually not 'hotel people' but there is good value to be found at the 'extended stay' type brand hotels. They have kitchens or at least a micro, refrigerator, coffee pot, etc plus a full breakfast buffet and 'manager hours' in the evening with more 'free food' - something to consider.

I did a search for Newport Beach, CA and came up with the following

Soi, you might consider doing PL or HW for some area that is close to somplace you would like to visit for those three days. There are lots of options for both hotels and activities in the LA Basin
You will not find this same situation in Southern California. It is true that many hotels in the SF Bay area ( Not San Francisco ) give substantial discounts for weekends and holidays as their clientèle are generally the business travelers. I have stayed at the Four Points Sheraton in Pleasanton on a weekend at a very cheap rate. You might find some deals in Irvine but I doubt it.

Personally, I would skip Palm Springs due to the summer heat. I would opt to spend the extra days at Laguna Beach or San Diego but it will not be cheap.

OK well I guess all the votes are in. Skip Palm Desert in July.

          I was afraid of that

All good suggestions. Keep them coming....I have time to play with this. I can even put in another search with TPI for something SCal coastal or they get GasLamp.

Good idea. They get a considerable number of GasLamp, you very well might get lucky.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

If you like Disneyland, the Ramada Inn across the street can usually be had for pretty cheap. It's not a very nice place, but I used to stay there with my 2 daughters for an overnight to spend 2 days at Disney. It's literally across the street and very easy to get into the park. Of course, that weekend is probably the worst time to go to Disney. But if you're across the street, you can go from opening till 11:00 and then go back from 8pm to closing.

There is a Worldmark in Oceanside, CA that maybe someone could reserve for you for a partial week if available.

That Laguna Surf week is a great exchange!!

Lawren, if you are really in a pinch, how about sleeping on our boat at the marina? There is room for the three of you! Our guest bedroom at home is full of junk and is only a double bed.

The only problem is that the marina is moving all our boats at our gangway and we do not know when exactly it is and where we will end up but it will be somewhere. It may be downtown Long Beach at Shoreline Village and you may see the Queen Mary from there.
