  • So Cal Swimming in November?

Wife and I (early 40's) and 2 daughters (8 and 11) are planning a 7 day So Cal trip. We are not dead set on November but it seems Disney would be nice with the Christmas decorations up (Somewhere between late October and mid December is our traveling window). We would like for the weather to be warmer than at home in St. Louis, a "get-a-way from the cold" type of trip. We went to Orlando in January and found the swimming pools to be fine, I realize that SD isnt as warm as Orlando in winter but I really hope to enjoy being outdoors and possibly getting wet around Thanksgiving.

We plan on visiting Disneyland, The SD Zoo, Tijuana, and maybe SeaWorld. Remainder of the trip we plan on staying at the Welk Resort in Escondido or at the Grand Pacific Palisades in Carlsbad. Reasons being RCI timeshare places with great pools and waterpark type stuff on site for the kids and relatively close to both Anaheim and San Diego. I think that some of the visiting coastal towns sound nice to visit but with young kids they will only be up for sightseeing the coast for short periods, thus the desire to have pool -waterpark entertainment at least part of the time.
Any thoughts or opinions on these places or ideas of things kids enjoy in these months.

Go for Welk Escondido. It is inland and warmer so I think you would get use of the pool especially if you go in October or early November.

Average Weather for Escondido, CA - Temperature and Precipitation

I don't see that resort often on RCI anymore it used to be pretty easy to get. Put in an on-going search and you may get lucky.

FYI - at WDW, the holiday decorations start to go up the week of Thanksgiving, maybe the weekend before.

I would put Sea World ahead of Tijuana. November is generally pretty nice but there are no guarantees. I assume you mean swimming in a heated pool and not the ocean. Inland will have warmer days and colder nights.

Socal natives may say that it is too cold to swim in heated pools for much of the winter months. But for those of us from the north, swimming in a heated pool and using the hot tubs when the temp is in the 60s is just fine.

I just wouldn't count on the temp allowing you to lay next to the pool after swimming.

I am a SoCal native and we do swim in heated pools and hot tubs during the winter months on the coast. If we have a really bad cold spell then maybe not but those are few and far between especially in November.

As far as swimming in the ocean you will need a wet suit in the fall, winter, and spring months. Last summer the water temp was very warm and averaged in the 70's over several stretches.

A few years ago we were at the Marriott La Jolla over Halloween and there was no swimming for us! It was freezing!

That was just the luck of the draw. If you happen to be here when it is warm then you will be able to swim but it can also be pretty cool. I always tell people visiting here during the late fall to early spring that the weather can be warm and sunny to cool and damp. It all depends on how lucky one is on being here at the right time. For example, next week the forecast is for 80's along the coast and 100 in the inland valleys due to a Santa Ana. It will be very low humidity. This will last for a week at most. The great thing about the winter weather in SoCal is that usually a cold snap or rainy weather doesn't last for more than a few days. That is great for us that live here but not so great if you happen to visit during a week of bad weather.

I was just in Welk Resort in SD last monday and the temperature was perfect. Perfect to play golf and swim in the pool. Temperature is not too far from Orlando where it's pretty warm in the noontime and cold in the afternoon. I remember when I was in Orlando where I always left my jacket when I leave in the morning and deal with a chilly afternoon. .... don't forget to bring your kid's to Legoland and have them try the Volvo driving course I think?? My 8 years old enjoyed Legoland and it's only 15 minutes from Welk Resort. They also have Pizza Hut, I can say they're pizza is better than the other Pizza Hut pizza I ever taste. Maybe they don't have a lot of customer and they really take their time to cook the pizza.

Swimming at your resort maybe, at the ocean, no way.

Have fun! Lawrence Welk is a resort we want to visit someday soon. I hear so many good things about it.

I agree. Our ocean is too cold most of the time. This summer, we had warmer water than usual but that is not the norm.

We spent one New Year's eve at midnight in a Jacuzzi at a condo at Mammoth Mountain (a ski area) and there was 6 ft of snow all around us. When you get out of the Jacuzzi, you don't feel the cold until you are in your condo and by that time, you get warm again. It's not that bad! We did the same at Lake Tahoe many times.

In other words, you can use the heated swimming pools or hot Jacuzzis in California any time during the winter.

Well, it was 75 this weekend (mid-Feb) and we all swam for 4 days straight. Today it's in the low 60s and way too cold for a dip in even a heated pool. It's a gamble in November too. There are often Santa Ana winds in November (hence the fires last year) that render the weather warm and dry and perfect for swimming. But you never know what days that will occur.
