  • How far away are you seeing or smelling smoke?

Hoping and praying for all those in jeopardy.

I remember a few years ago when Mexico had tremendous fires. Living in Houston several hundred miles away, we could smell the smoke from the fires every morning. Some days there was a smoky haze hanging in the air.

How far away are you if you are seeing or smelling the fires down around San Diego?

Mike.....the fires are wide spread not just in San Diego. In terms of homes/businesses burned SD has been hit the hardest. There are huge fires in San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and LA counties.

The smoke and ash are everywhere since Sunday when the winds started blowing. The fire in OC was one mile from our house on Sunday evening and that fire is still moving south.

Right now when I look out the window it is brown and orange....we stay inside for the most part but can still smell the smoke. I would post a picture of it but my photo server does not work on this site.

We are out of danger in mid OC for now but the winds can always flare up all the smoldering debris. South OC is getting hit hard now as the fire is going into the older homes that are in canyons and not up to code not that it would matter much in some areas.

LA Times Map for SD fires

Not yet but it could get there based on former fire perimeters.....El Cajon is just south of the Witch Fire.

We are fine but we smelled the heavy smoke at home and ashes were floating around everywhere. We did see the flames of the fire in Orange County when we were driving in the Canyon and on the freeway too.

There are at least twelve different fires going between Santa Barbara and the Mexican border. It is so sad because many houses have burned down and the season is only beginning.

John, I hope that you will be safe and the same for everyone else too in this area.

In case you want to check to see what you can about locations, these are good sites:

News 8, San Diego: Wildfire Coverage

The UT has a Goggle map that they seem to be keeping up on fairly well:
                San Diego Fires - Information
It shows the location of the fires as well as the evacuations.

SD County Emergency Homepage: San Diego County Emergency Homepage

an evacueeposted this site to to watch her house......

Far east El Cajon is close to the fires.

Frank, How familiar are you with the area? The 67 is shut down, that goes from Ramona to I-8 in El Cajon. There is concern the fires from the south(Chula Vista) will go North along the 67, which is El Cajon/Santee area.

I live between the fires in San Diego County and the ones farther North. We do have a fire now within about 15 miles from our house. On Monday morning I awoke to a thick layer of soot on everything. However I can't smell any smoke and the sky is clear and bright blue at my house.

My sister was able to go home in Del Mar...the place was a mess with soot and smoke that got through the closed windows and doors but at least they have their home still.

Looks like the fire may be headed back our way. We heard continuous helicopter activity all night.

The fires in Malibu are fully contained so hopefully they will not be any more problem.
