Just another shaker

Quake was about 20 miles from my home in Los Altos. I was in bed because I get up at 2:30 am for work. Long shaker but I doubt if any damage. I will know Wednesday when I get to work (grocery store). Hopefully, no mess.
I had turned the radio on and the person talking was so scared it sounded like they need someone to hold their hand.

OMG, my DD called from San Fransisco last night at 11:15 pm eastern time to say there was just a shake - she said at first they thought the people upstairs were jumping up and down!

She said the NY peole jumped up and ran to stand under the doorway and the CA peole didn't do a thing

Hope there was no real damage...I will have to call her ack and tell her that the day after she was born, I was layig in the hospital bed post C-section and an earthquake hit Westchester County, NY at 6 am at around a 5 on the scale....now THAT was scarey

Oh my, Pat! Having had two c-sections, I can't imagine being in the hospital with a new wee babe and having that strong of a quake! Here in Arizona, we also have quakes, but not nearly that strong. The strongest one was about 15 years ago when pools sloshed water and our vertical blinds were swaying like mad. All I gotta say about California people are they must be braver than I!

not a biggie. I was underground waiting for the subway 'BART' train and there was only a 5 min delay to 'check the system', what ever that means. I mean, if there was an issue, all of us on the platform would have been rushing out of the station as we are the last station before the trains head into the San Francisco Bay, like underwater !

We felt it. We're a bit north east of where it hit. Being a "California girl" through and through I knew exactly what it was. What I didn't know is that when there is an earthquake of a 5.0 or larger, there is a greater possibility of another larger quake occuring within 72 hours. The USGS said if the quake last night had occured on the Hayward fault (which we pretty much sit on top of) they would have been more concerned.

Between the fires in southern California and this current earthquake, it's just our way of saying "Are you really sure you want to move to California?"

I didn't feel anything here in Sacramento. Being that is was only in the 5's I decided last night not to bother calling my family in the SF Bay Area who all live along the Hayward Fault. I'll check with them later today to see if they felt it. Small quakes like this one usually don't hurt anyone unless they get hit by something falling.

I was sitting at home watching TV. The house started rattling slowly and then it started getting a lot stronger like a small rumble. It lasted for 15 or 20 seconds. It wasn't really that serious. Josie and I just looked at each other and said, "oh, an earthquake". I just continued to watch TV. No real damage around the Bay Area, just a small quake.

I lived directly over a subway line for a while and the smaller quakes are less than the trains going by every 5 minutes or so.

I felt it, I'm currently in Oakland at the Courtyard Marriott on a business trip and last night felt my room rocking and rolling and after about 5 seconds realized that I just experienced my first earthquake. Actually not too bad untill I was about to run into the hallway to see what was going on andl I realized that I first needed to put my pants on.

You know that all of the stations east of Civic Center are below bay level, right? To do a system check all of the trains operate on manual (which is below 25 mph, but in this case was probably between 5 mph and 10 mph) until they reached a specified area. After an earthquake they are suppose to do a "clearance run," where the operators evaluate the track, the sides of the tunnel, the power source (the looks of it), etc. Every inch of revenue track should have this clearance done before full service can resume.

I can't say this positively for Bart, but I'm fairly sure this is the same as for MUNI. At MUNI, every day the first train into "the system," meaning the tunnel/subway has to do an out of service clearance run, and then report the condition of the system before service begins. I know; I've both operated the clearance run and taken the report on it over my career.
