  • I was ousted from the SoCal Beach Club Board

We had our annual meeting today and the person who had the highest number of votes was from out of state, didn't show up for the annual meeting, and I wonder if he will ever make it to any board meetings if he couldn't even show up at the meeting for people to vote. Oh well... Maybe I'll run again in two years.

Are you sure he's not a planted candidate? Such things have been known to happen if a developer/management decides to fight dirty. Is the Board majority owners or developer? Sorry to hear to lost your seat. Keep after it if you care about the resort.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't planted. The board is 2/5 management and 3/5 non-management owners. I will try to keep up with what is happening there and will likely run again in 2 years. It is a fair amount of work to be on a timeshare board and some of the issues that come up are stressful, so for now, I'll have 2 years to be a non-stressed owner. Then I can try to jump into the fray again. I won't have to worry about leaving work early on Fridays twice a year to get to the meetings on time any longer. That will be good. (Always looking on the bright side)

Your seat would appear to be a swing seat, and would therefore be a real temptation for management to run a plant candidate.

I think it is a serious mistake to have managment sit on the board in the first place, as there is a huge conflict of interest. They need to understand that they are the hired help not the boss.

By and away the worst run timeshare on the Outer Banks, on all fronts from maintenance to finances, for many years was one where a management company manuevered their flunkies into most or all of the board seats of an all-homeowner board. They wormed themselves into a position where all board candidates sent the managment company their resumes and platforms, which were then vetted by the management company. Management then submitted one recommended name for each open board seat, which was rubberstamped by the board, and only those names were printed on the ballots that were mailed out. Anyone else had to run as a write-in without their name printed on the ballot. Finally, however, mismanagment got so bad that a majority of the board woke from their slumber, rose to the occaision, and fired the managment company. I must say that I was surprised, and pleased for them, when I got the call from the board president at that resort asking to meet with some of his board to plan stategy to free the resort from its entanglement with this management company.

If you don't end up getting stressed over any actions they take that you'd have been opposed to, that is!

Enjoy the break... then get back at it

I don't think it was a plant.. the management HQ is nearby. I would think.. they would try to get someone in that is local to be on the board. Not from 1000 miles away.

The person that Edye replaced on the board when she was first elected. He was on the board for 20 years. He gave management fits all the time.. and they never forced him out.

I don't always agree with the management company, but I don't think they would do something like that.

Let me think . . . have I ever been ousted from a board?

Having seen management companies / developers on the Outer Banks play lots of games to try to control boards, and one - BIS - still does, what is a red flag to me is that this management company doesn't recognize the huge conflict of interest that exists from managment being on the board at all.

Boy, I could talk about screwed-up boards/management companies, and how an individual can screw up an entire resort, but I'm not going to for now, hoping for it to play out favorably.

But, it would scare the bejeebies outa someayouse!
