We're only going to be staying for 3 days at the resort, checking out on Oct 8. Does anyone want to use the balance of the week until Oct 12? (gratis unless a guest cert if required for those days)

I would say so. We definitely enjoyed our stay. You're directly across the street from the water and beach. If you have an oceanview unit, you can watch the water all day. They rarely come up on ebay. I've only seen a few over the past couple years. The resort has resales available right now for ~$4500 - $6000

If you really like it and can get a summer week then it would be great. I refuse to buy because they use a lotto system for their week selection and I need to plan in advance and cannot leave it up to a lotto.

Is this place a good one to buy in to?

How far in advance do they tell you what your week is? Wonder how likely it is to get a summer week as thats obviously what i would want.

There are two types of ownerships: floating 1-52 and 26-35. The 1-52 weeks can book summer but it is separate inventory from the 26-35 ownership. If you can find a summer only, then you're guaranteed prime usage. I can't remember when you find out, I think it was end of Feb. There is an in-house resale guy that you can contact to find out and see what he has for inventory.

Based on emails with Sarah at Tamarack, it works like this:

As DJ said, there are two types of ownership, Select Season, mid June thru mid September and All Season.

The lottery begins the first Monday in March for all 2 bedroom All Season owners, the first Monday in April for all 1 bedroom All Season and
the first Monday in May for all Select Season Owners.

These reservations are for the follwing year. Next week the 2 bdr All Season owners will receive the lottery results for 2011 reservations. If you are an All Season owner and are assigned Jan/Feb/beginnig of March, you will not be able to deposit 12 months out. That may affect traders in both RCI and II.

So I guess the question is is this a good way to do it or bad? Are you more successful at getting the week you want just by calling when its time or leaving it up to chance? Is this place worth it? What kind of trader is it if it is a non summer week you end up getting

Based on what I have been told, calling would not make any difference. You get what the lottery assigns you. When I was there, I saw notes on a bulletin board in the game room requesting internal trades. Unless you buy Select season you can't know that you will ever get a summer week. I wouldn't give a winter week to RCI. SoCal trades well but there are shades of red even there. Surprisingly, Interval's Travel Demand index is not impressive for this resort either. I have no idea how accurate that is.

Carlsbad Inn right across the street has fixed unit fixed week.
Look for a summer week there. I put a wanted ad on tug about 5 years ago and asked for a week 32 or 33 I had a couple of responses and found a week 33. I would prefer a 3rrd floor unit but I ended up with a second floor which is fine. Many people do not like the ground floor but those with small children may prefer it. Others may not care either. Great Location and a nice resort. We have not regretted this purchase at all.

When I called the resort, I was told that All Season is eligible for mid-September to mid-June, not that it was eligible for all year. So the person on the phone is confused?

And it is a pure lottery -- draw name out of box type of system. I personally would not want to buy even a Select Season when I can't be guaranteed a summer week when the kids would be out.
