We are looking to try to get one of our weeks at the Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort in South Lake Tahoe, the week between Christmas and New Years in 2009. Usually could one ski that time of the year? And where all does one ski in the South Lake Tahoe area?

My guys love Heavenly (it's covers a lot of area, all types of terrain). Christmas is good a majority of the time, we have family that go every year. Also good skiing in North Tahoe at Squaw Valley and Northstar, among others.

I have only been there once. We are going back in early Jan of 2009. If you are in South Lake Tahoe then Heavenly is your local resort. You can easily drive yourself, take local buses, or get on the downtown gondola to get to Heavenly.
Now the other ski resorts, IMO, are not "easy" to get to. I guess how easy they are to get to depends on your driving skills, the weather that day, what you are driving, ... all those factors.
I come from Ohio. I've been driving in the snow for my whole life. The drive from South Lake Tahoe up the western side of the lake to get to Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows is beautiful. It is well worth it - Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are both great. But personally I would not tell someone it's easy. It's not a dangerous or risky drive. But it does contain hairpin-type turns going up and down a mountain and also driving along a cliff. There are gaurd rails and I did not feel unsafe at any time. But this is not a leasurely drive especially given the snow, a road you've never been on, and a vehicle you may have just rented for the week.
Also if I remember right it took about 45 minutes or so to get to Kirkland. It took maybe 45 to get to Alpine Meadows. And around an hour to get to Squaw Valley. Again this will depend on weather conditions and your skills.
Don't get me wrong about this as a ski vacation destination. It's awesome and as I said we are going back. But getting from resort to resort is no where near as convienient or as easy as it is in Park City Utah or the Vail area resorts in Colorado.

My husband is the skier in the family and prefers the North Tahoe ski resorts (Squaw and Northstar) so much that he will not approve an exchange into any South shore timeshare properties. This is frustrating as we own a Marriott and could probably exchange into one of the 2 Marriotts in South Lake Tahoe pretty easily. He feels that Heavenly has too many bad skiers and he doesn't like the terrain as much as the northern resorts. Alpine Meadows is also very good, although there are no timeshares right there.
