  • Airport options - Lawrence Welk Resort

We are going to Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido, CA next April. Is San Diego Airport the only airport that we should consider or are there others? Will be flying from Nashville, TN and Detroit, MI.

San Diego is roughly 35 miles to the south. John Wayne(Orange county) is 60-70 miles to the north. LAX is probably 100 to the northwest.

I don't know if your situation is similar, but from MSP, John Wayne is usually significantly more expensive, if that is true for you SAN would probably be the best bet.

Another option is Ontario International Airport (ONT) about 80 miles north of Escondido. Interstate 15 runs between the two.

Your choices are San Diego which is about 42 miles from LW resort, Ontario which is about 72 miles and Orange County which is about 68 miles. I would check all 3 airports for the best flights. We fly in and out of Ontario the most though also do San Diego and LAX as well. Ontario is a very easy airport to get in and out of. Traffic can be very bad for any of them if you have to travel during commute time.

When we went to the beautiful LW, we flew from BUF to Las Vegas and stayed there a few days on each end of the trip. It was a 5 hour drive from LV to Escondido. It made the trip extra fun!

What times are considered the rush hour for this part of California? Does it make a difference on the weekend? Our check in and out is on Saturday.

Carlsbad CA is also quite close and sometimes, surprisingly, cheaper than the others mentioned, but if you're renting a car go for the cheapest airfare and cheapest car rental combo for all those LA or SD airports mentioned.

You should also consider Long Beach Airport (LGB) which is very consumer friendly, easy in and out, and Jet Blue uses it as its So. Cal Hub.

Saturday should not be a problem traffic wise. Friday afternoon from about 3:00 - 6:30 PM is the worst.
