We went to Indio a few weeks ago and had a little drive to dinner, shopping, etc. We went into Palm Springs one night to eat and have decided to return in May but stay in Palm Springs this time as we're going mainly for the restaurants and shopping.
We've decided when we're going to relax, read books by the pool, play tennis/golf, but cook in our unit most of time and not leave the grounds much, we'll do Palm Desert. When we go (probably w/friends) for dining/drinks/nightlife, we'll go to Palm Springs.

I'm sorry...I didn't see that part before I jumped right into my reply
I am in the process right now of researching all the different TS resorts in both areas as well as the different exchange companies. I too would be interested in any suggestions and recommendations from experienced Palm Springs exchangers.
Anyone??

Our favorite resort in Palm Springs is the Oasis which is a VI resort. It is a combination of fully owned condos and timeshare units with about 7 small pools throughout the property including one which is adults only. Every unit has it's own gas grill and some units have a small back yard and also a garage. If you're traveling with children the Palm Canyon Resort has a great pool with water slides. In Palm Desert the Marriotts are nice and Westin Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage. In Oct we are staying at Desert Breezes which is where we stayed on our first trip to Palm Springs about 12 years ago. It depends what you're planning on doing in the area. I like being close to downtown Palm Springs for the restaurants but will probably enjoy Desert Breezes for a change.

We go to the general area several times a year. We own at Desert Breezes in Palm Desert but have exchanged into Marriott Desert Springs I, Marquis Villas, and Oasis Villas. We also visited the Welk resort but they are all 1 bedrooms and we need 2 so ruled it out even though it is in a nice location.
For perspective Palm Springs is at the west end of the valley and has a concentration of restaurants. Palm Desert is at the east end and has closer proximaty to upscale shopping and also has some restaurants. Everything is within about 20 minutes drive no matter where you stay. If you want golf you might like the Marriott which is sort of central and has restaurants and is on a golf course. If you want sight seeing it really doesn't matter. You will need a car and need to drive to see the major sites in the area. It really depends on what ambiance you are looking for, small & quiet or large and likely to have more people to visit with at the pool.
We really love Desert Breezes but it doesn't have any restaurant or fancy pool with a bar and all that. Marriott or Westin would be better if you want that sort of thing. The Oasis Villas are similar in ambiance to Desert Breezes but closer to downtown Palm Springs.
What sort of experience are you looking for? We haven't found a resort in the area that hasn't been a great experience just different. The legitimate object of Government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done but cannot do at all or cannot do so well for themselves”- Lincoln

Do you have a favorite building/location at Desert Breezes? I seem to remember from the reviews that the older buildings have small hot tubs outside and the newer buildings don't but they have fireplaces. We have a 2 bedroom confirmed with SFX and the confirmation says fireplace. Would this mean we are in one of the new buildings? I'm sure we will enjoy the resort as we are like you and prefer the quieter places like the Oasis.

We only live an hour from Palm Springs and visit there frequently for 2-3 nights. There are several casinos in the area stretching from west of Palm Springs to Coachella. We have been to them all. Our favorite casino is the SPA in downtown Palm Springs. It is an elegant mid-sized casino with a good variety of machines and a good buffet. Get a players card and you will get a discount at the buffet. The SPA is owned by the Agua Caliente Tribe which also has a sister casino resort Agua Caliente in Rancho Mirage just off I-10. Below is a link to the Agua Caliente/SPA casinos:
Welcome to Agua Caliente Casino • Resort • Spa and Spa Resort Casino
The largest casino/resort is Morongo which is west of Palm Springs on I-10. It is huge and it also has a very large outlet mall adjacent to the casino. There are 3 others in the area. Below is a link showing all the casinos with info about them.
They offer entertainment, restaurants, etc.

There are many other things to do. My favorite is the Aerial Tram that goes up Mt. San Jacinto. It is like going into another world whether it is summer or winter. Temperature drops by about 40 degrees.

It is interesting that they listed the Temecula Valley wineries. I live in the Temecula Valley. If one decides to visit the Temecula Valley from the Palm Springs area, I strongly suggest they take route 74 from Palm Desert through Anza to Temecula.
By the way, Palm Desert is not in the eastern part of the valley. It is in the middle. Coachella is at the eastern end.John
