  • Having a great time in Napa

This is day three (I think-I am so confused and tired), of our stay in Napa, CA at the River Pointe Resort.

We flew into Sacramento on Saturday, and stayed the night. Into Napa on Sunday and before we even got checked in, we had picked up the other couple that came in a couple days earlier and went for a wine tasting. Seghesio was a big way to start. We had pretasting of 5-6 wines, then a private tasting for the four of us with 4 foods and 5 wines, then a follow up of two more wines.

We got back to the resort, checked in, and started enjoying our room. While not big, these units are perfect for our needs, and the other couple in our group.

We did more tastings on Monday, but don't ask me where. I bought a bottle of the best barbara I have had. We did the wine train Monday night. Three hours of good food, fine wines, beatiful scenery and I didn't push Linda off the train. I was well behaved.

Tuesday, we had three wineries scheduled, Ferrari-Carano, someplace else and Kendall Jackson tasting center. I went in for a 4 taste reserve flight, and ended up tasting about 12 wines, with 1 at $70 and 1 wine at $120. Holly cow. We ended up tasting about 20 wines that day, some very big.

Tasting schedule is changing for the rest of the week based on what we learn here, but it will be sure to be an interesting tine with some new experiences at unknown wineries and maybe I will make it through the week without strangling my wife's friend Linda. But I am not going to hold my breath on that one.

Do you find the tasting to be rather on the pricey side, What was your favorite winery so far?

The reserve tasting at Rosenbloom was $8, the desert wine tasting (DW) was $6 and both ended up being free. The private tasting we did with the food and wine pairing was only $25. I felt that to be a very good deal. The KJ reserve tasting was $15. We got more wines than were listed and we got it without paying for the tasting fee. We are doing a balsamic vinegar tasting this morning which includes a winery tour and I think some wine tasting. Louis Martini is at our wine club meeting tonight. Since we are missing it, we are thinking of going there.

The DW has made her way through the web sites and found a lot of discount or free tasting coupons. So far, we have paid very little, usually $5 per site when we do get charged. I think if you show that you do know wines and have interest in their wines, they work with you a little more. I believe we have had extra wines poured at each tasting, so have always gotten more for our fee.

I think the KJ Stature wine is very good, but also very pricey at $120. I picked up a bottle for $58 a year a go, so was interrested to see what I had.

But, I had an old vine Zin at Seghesio that was held in my glass for a long time, just so I could enjoy the aroma. Wonderful wine.

The Barbara was wonderful too. The vanilla finish from the oak just smoothed it out.

I am going higher end this trip, so am finding many wonderful wines. The problem will be getting them shipped back. Most wineries are $30-40, but when you have to go off site, it gets to be $55-140.

Tonight, we are grilling chicken, so will be in search of a nice wine for that. Tomorrow, the other couple is grilling steak, and have found a wine for that which will be opened well before the steak is ready.

Trading stocks now, will drink wine later. I love California time for that schedule.

If you have good boxes you can buy the wines and ship them back your self. YOu can also pack some in your checked bags.

          Have a Great Time.

I really like going to the Ferrari Carano Winery just to see the beauty of the winery. The Gardens of Ferrari-Carano are spectacular.

I also like eating at the Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant in St. Helena.

We have joined several wine club membership over the years. But most of their wine I can get at home. So the only wine club I still have membership with is for the V. Sattui Winery. The 2 reasons for keeping the membership with them is that I love their red wine. And V. Sattui wines are sold only at the Winery, not in store or restaurants anywhere.

I also like getting a bottle of wine and some food from their Deli and eating at their picnic grounds.

I think (but not possitive) that V. Sattui is the winery that is doing a tasting at the resort this afternoon. I am doing my meal prep work before we go to the tasting.

The wine that most surprised me today was Turn Bull Back Label. Wonderful wine with Cab, Cab Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petite Verdot (forgive my spelling). It was a $100 bottle of wine, but better than the $120 bottles we tried yesterday.

Tonight, I am preparing a chicken breast with bread crumbs, deglassed pan with a white wine, butter and capers, with Rosemary Potatoes, and asparagagus for the four of us served with very nice Chardonna from The Terraces winery. We toured their place this morning and had the balsamic vinager. Wow. What a facility for a small operation. Very nice place. Going to be a good meal after a nice day.
