  • Back from gambling trip to Palm Springs

Last week we spent 4 nights at the Agua Caliente casino/resort in Rancho Mirage. We have found a new home there. It is the first time we have stayed at their hotel as it just opened last year. We are always on the lookout for new gambling venues. We were very impressed and it takes a lot to impress us as we have visited over 125 casinos in California, Nevada, Arizona, Canada, Missouri, Illinois, Idaho, etc. We are fully comped Diamond members at Harrah's where we frequently stay at Harrah's Rincon ( San Diego County ) and the Paris in Las Vegas.

We have played several times at all the casinos in the Palm Springs area but had never stayed at one of their hotels. We always stayed at the Hyatt in downtown Palm Springs and played regularly at the Spa Casino which is also owned by the Agua Caliente tribe. The same player's card works at both casinos. This time we decided to stay at the Agua Caliente hotel/casino resort.

We were very pleasantly surprised with the resort. The hotel is very nice and the rooms are nicer than any we have stayed at. The basic rooms are 550 sq. ft., very nicely furnished with a large flat screen TV in the room and a smaller flat screen TV in the bathroom. They also have mini refrigerators. The bathroom is large with twin sinks and separate large shower and bathtub. They have a buffet which isn't the greatest but the other restaurants are very good. The pool area and jacuzzi are very nice. They also have a showroom with headliner entertainment. All in all the resort is quite luxurious. The service was great from the valet parking, bell man, check-in, etc. They gave us an upper floor room with a nice view of the pool area. We never let them know that we are serious players until we checked out.

The casino is very good with a wide variety of slot and video poker machines as well as the usual table games. The slots are pretty loose, certainly much looser than the Las Vegas strip. The video poker has better pay tables than the LV strip as well. A few years ago Agua Caliente was fairly tight but not anymore. This has happened at a lot of the California casinos as the competition has grown.

Upon check-out, we asked to see a casino executive host to see what they would do for us. We had no problem seeing one. He comped us for all our hotel charges which included the 4 nights and food charged to the room. He gave us his card and told us to call him directly in the future and he would put us in a suite and comp everything. This is what we receive from Harrah's. We will definitely be going back several times. The Agua Caliente will definitely replace our visits to the Paris in Las Vegas and some of our Harrah's Rincon visits.

I posted this as I am sure there must be some other folks that like to gamble and are looking for a really nice place to do it.

As a non-gambler (not >$100, ever) how does this happen (for lack of a better word) ?

I was wondering about that, too!

You just go up and say "I lost a pile of money here, how 'bout you comp all the charges I racked up?"

You simply ask at the front desk or visit the VIP services offices. However you would be wasting your time and theirs if you are not a serious player.

They do NOT comp based on your losses. You will be comped just as well if you won money. The comps are based on how much money you cycle through the machines. That is cycled money and not necessarily your money. If you are on a hot machine, you could easily cycle through $1,000. using less than $100. of your money. Basically if the casino executive host doesn't know you then you just hand them your player's card. They will run it through their computer and tell you what they can do for you. Make sure that you talk to an executive host and not just a casino host. The executive hosts have a fair amount of leeway in what they can offer.

Comps are not given as a gift because you lost money and they feel sorry for you. Comps are given as an incentive to get you back to their casino. One should never play for comps but should play for the fun of it. I just look at the comps as being something extra I get for playing like I would anyway regardless of being comped.
