  • Sinkholes

For whatever reason, several sinkholes have opened up the past few days. One is on I4 between Orlando and Tampa and has I4 tied up. It happened yesterday.

You might want to check on it if you are traveling that way. Near Plant city, eastbound lane.

As deep as a 35-story building is tall and as big as a football field.

Must be tied to the cold weather, don't you think?

I heard it was tied to the heavy watering that farmers did to combat the freeze for the past two weeks.

That would make sense in the Plant City area.

Today the detour, US92, developed a sinkhole.

Hmmm ... we have to get from SW Florida to I-95 in SC on Friday. Any suggestions? Maybe we should take I-75 up and then I-10 east - ??

We go up I-75 to Exit 382... take 331 around Gainesville connecting (a straight shot forward) with 24 on east side of Gainesville.

Continue up 24 to Waldo where it dumps onto 301.

301 crosses I-10 west of Jacksonville. Anymore we jog on I-10 to I-295 beltway and connects onto I-95 north of Jax.

We used to shoot straight on up 301 which become A1A and entered I-95 north of Jax. Not speedway!

By taking I-10 and the beltway, you go at Interstate speeds and have speedway traffic.

301 traffic slows for short periods of 45 or even 35 for most towns. Not too bad if you resign yourself to "you are getting somewhere and avoiding Tampa to Orlando and Daytona traffic."

We rarely take I-4 to and from SW FL.

Stay off of I 4 eastbound, between Tampa and Lakeland, until the road is fixed and all lanes open! Traffic backs up for miles every day. They predict reopening lanes early next week.

As of yesterday they have poured 85000 gallons (tons?????) of concrete into the hole, in columns.

Just reported on the Tampa NBC station that all lanes on I 4 will reopen later this evening!! Commuters will be much happier on Monday.

We're back home and I heard an ad for sinkhole insurance on the radio, which is wierd cuz we don't have that problem. Then, when I saw the newspaper, yes we do, one in a heavily populated area.

Sinkholes were covered under my old house insurance policy. After reading this I need to make sure I am still covered. I 95 in Palm Beach had a lot of sinkhole problems a few years ago. Don't remember the entire highway being closed but several lanes were constanly being closed.

Are the sinkholes related to all the swampland in FL? Up here in PA, we get them all the time because we have so much limestone that's eroded by water.

You can google it and let us know, but my guess it has to do with not much base rock. In lots of FL it's just sand on sand on sand.
When something down lower gives way, it all does.

There, it's posted on the Internet, so it's true.
