We got a ocean front unit and enjoyed the resort. It was a bit chilly so we looked for a winter home in the area. but decided to look on the gulf side at a later date.

        JLB,

Is that a winter home or are you going to move there full time?

We would be there just in the winter as we live on the lake and have a tennat.

We like the Wisconsin winter but it is a bit long and in Florida Judys penison would not be taxed at this time. But I think that might change because of a number of factors that are hammering the Florida state and local Florida budgets.

I will give you a call sometime today to pick your brain.

state income taxes or the lack thereof is the reason we chose florida (although there were a lot of reasons). Wisconsin taxes are high. but you need to live here over six months a year. Florida doesn't check, but wisconsin might.

Let me ask the neighbors here.

Our plans are winter, during our little jobs' off-season. Nov-April (ish).

There are gray areas for Florida benefits . . . what constitutes residency, whether one spouse can qualify as a resident and get homestead exemption and the other have residency in another state, insurance gray areas.

lots of our neighors have one a resident in floria and one a resident up north. the up north one usually owns that house, but not always, sometimes it is joint, the one up north files the income taxes alone. they file a joint return here.
our friends tried it and ended up losing an exemption up north, they wanted to get hoestead exemptions in both states, but they do ask if you are getting a homestead exemption when you file the paperwork for the homestead exemption here. If you mark yes, they notify the other state.

In addition to registring the car here, getting auto insurance here (higher), driver's license, voting, bank account, we had to revise the trust, sign and have notarized a statement that this was our legal residence and filed it with the county. (a laawyer did this for us). we do stay here 6 and a half months and we don't leave the state during that time. i know some who don't and claim residency.

No, you cannot have two homestead exemptions.

Residency in Florida involves making a declaration:

It makes you wonderful enjoyment on boat to coca beach. The coca beach is just as nice like a city. I love sitting on a beach, reading and snorkeling.

Hmm. The place could have or should have a commercial property area or condo like building to offer to people and visitors. The place is a very great place to stay.
