    • Red Tide . . . one of the few negatives about SW FL.

      Today more than 10,000 dead fish were picked up on Ft. Myers Beach.

      Red Tide has been coming and going, moving up and down SW FL beaches all winter. Some days when we are boating it is fine, with no dead fish, and other days there are dead fish all over the place and breathing is a problem. Whatever it is, it gives a severe tickle in your throat and you cough a lot.

      Sanibel has recommended no swimming and to stay away from dead fish.

      Black Bears . . . Really? Yes. Another SW FL problem. East Naples being hit hard. Two huge black bears just tore the lanai off a 90-year-old lady's house.

                • I have always been an advocate of trying to leave things better than we "found" them, like in real estate, or in the environment.

                  All those many years ago, the builder who built our little Florida house, and many others, started a private beach club. You know, one of those sorta hoyty toyty deals with a key-card gate, pavillion/clubhouse, picnic tables, and beach access.

                  This morning we found out we are eligible to be members of it.

                      • This one looks do-able. It is in the neighborhood that has the ramp and dock into Oyster Creek. Nice people; they let us put our pontoon in there to save us a few miles out of the way from the public ramp. Even a fireplace. That's a nice touch. Decent curb appeal with nice corner lot.

                          • We got rid of Citizens' Insurance.

                            This state insurance company which was intended to be an insuror of the last and became an over-burdened insuror of only resort for many homeowners in Florida, has had a program whereby other insurors can assume their policies. A homeowner has to opt out of an assumption, or the other company takes over the policy.

                            We opted out last year, but this year our agent is in favor of the company taking our policy over, so we did not opt out.

                            It would be hard for the new company to be harder to do business with than Citizens. If I had not "forced" an email confirmation of a conversation I had with one of their home office people when we bought our house, we could not have gone to closing, and, then, at the first renewal we had to do everything we had to do to initiate the policy all over again.

                            We know we were going to have to do it all over again at another renewal soon.

                            I'm talking about all the mitgation and roof crap.

                            Hopefully the new company will just take our money and leave us alone.

                            We would self insure, except that we have to have a policy on it in order for our other liability umbrella to to apply.
