My addiction is not so acute that I absolutely need a fix while trying to vacation.

So I have not looked into all of the advanced technologies. I know they're available.

However, the couple that is now vacationing with us in SW Florida does have that need to get connected wherever they're at. They couldn't explain what they have, but it is a laptop that appears to get it's signal from cell towers.

I used it and posted a bit last January. The small, awkward keyboard and the quirkiness of cell phone-type operation, with connections being dropped like cell calls getting dropped, did not make it an enjoyable, have-to-have-one-too experience. But it forebodes of things to come, and it makes sense to take your communications wherever you go, like many now do not have a home phone land line.

I saw Vince Vaughn on Letterman last week and I guess I'm little like him. He doesn't even have a cell phone. He says he never had any problems with the old system---someone calls him on his home phone and leaves a message. When he can, he calls them back. It's worked for years!

It's amazing how much consumers have tacked onto the basic needs since a generation ago. Now folks have to have something better than an air TV signal, either cable or SAT, to have 120 channels that they do not want to watch. Everyone in the family has to have a cell phone. Of course, they have to take pictures and access the Internet. Then there's the Internet connection itself, with a PC or laptop for everyone. And an Ipod or some other way to have your favorite music playing in your ear wherever you go. And a portable DVD player so the kids are not bored on those long road trips.

I remember my first transistor radio, made in Japan of course, which I won by faking starts, new customers on my paper route. Wow, I could sit in the back yard and listen to Harmon Killibrew hit home runs, without having a radio plugged in anywhere!

And at the same time with an overwhelming abundance of information at everyone's fingertips, it's amazing how many do not use it at all, but just make decisions based on what they believe to be fact, and continue to screw up.
