We stayed at the Howard Johnson Inn in St Augustine for two nites last summer. It's on one of the main streets but not in the center of town. It was very adequate and clean. Even had free continental breakfast. The two tour trollys even stop at the hotel because there is a very old historic tree on the property. The Fountain of Youth is within walking distance of the hotel.

Check the government rate at Marriott Renassance World Golf Village.
I don't agree with the TA ranking. Rooms, however, are small, most have a separate sitting area. Ask for parking and entrance (free) at their beach club shared with the Sawgrass Marriott.
We were not so happy when the BG was a Sheraton......and it was practically brand new.
Marti, Unless you are going specifically to play golf there and see the world golf museum, I think you would be better off to stay in town or near the beach.

I own at The Beach Club at St. Augustine. I think being on the beach and going to the Old Town when you want to go there, is the best way of seeing St. Auguustine. It is a 10 to 15 minute drive from St. Augustine Beach to the Old Town depending on the time of the day and where you are staying.
I agree with you TennisWalt. We booked into The Golf Villas and had RCI transfer us to the Beach Club at St Augustine. We were much happier there. although if you just stay at the pool, you will like the World Golf Village Pool better.
