  • Florida Hurricane Alert

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Wednesday, a broad area of low pressure, accompanied by showers and thunderstorms, is sweeping towards Puerto Rico. However, it's what happens to this storm system after its encounter with the U.S. territory that is concerning weather forecasters and Gulf Coast residents from Miami to Brownsville, Texas.

As of Wednesday morning, all forecast scenarios were still on the table, meaning this could become tropical storm or even Hurricane Hermine within the next five days.

Or it could fizzle out completely — though that's becoming less likely.

On that second one, it's forming up, and not far away.

The up-to-the-minute official guess has it being pushed past Florida and into the Gulf. So, it has 20% chance of becoming something for FL, except for a heavy rain event. However, the extended time over the Gulf gives it a 60% chance of becoming something there.

Now elevated to a Hurricane Watch, North of Tampa in Cedar Key area.

That area of the Gulf is notoriously shallow, so storm surge could be significant. But, a fairly undeveloped region.

4, 6, or 8 inches in that area so far, depending where exactly

(only good if you click it now)

On 8/8 the storm total in this area of the Gulf NW of Tampa was 20". Right now it is 14".

That's a lot of rain in a month.
