  • There'll Be No Flying to Florida This Year

Last January we flew Allegiant Air from Springfield, MO to Orlando/Sanford. Fares varied from $59 a leg to $199 a leg.

I've been trying to book that for a couple months and they just now finally posted fares--starting at $229 a leg.

Even if we wanted to we couldn't book it because our return date is in January and it cannot be booked yet.

Altogether there's around 10 of us. Last year we could have flown for less than $2000. This year it is more than $5000.

    Bummer.

It's funny that you mentioned this because while we were in Branson, I asked my wife if she thought you flew or drove to Florida. We concluded that the drive was too long for a one week trip and that that would cut too much time off of your vacation to make it worth it. We didn't consider that the airfares would make it cost prohibitive.

In my current incarnation we started going to Florida in 1989. Because we were doing shows while we were there, we drove. Sometimes we pulled a trailer and sometimes just our van. That was from Kansas City.

We moved to the lake in 2002 and only did shows for another year, maybe two, I'd have to check.

So, we have our regular places to stop, normally the Southlake exit on the other side of Atlanta. We finish the drive the second day and arrive about check-in time.

Last year was the first year any air service from Springfield to Orlando was offered. Because it was new they promoted it with low fares, starting at $59 per leg. Six of us went, with three different flight dates. Out fares per couple ranged from just over $200 to just over $300.

Jenny's brother and his wife were the lowest last year, at around $230. This year it will be $1000. If they drive, they too have their regular stop--Orlando.

We rented a Chevy Uplander for the three weeks for $600.

I knew Allegiant Air was holding back fares because of fuel prices and because they know they can gouge this area for Christmas flights to and from Orlando.

It is awkward to drive because we all have to. We are staying at least two weeks and everyone else just one.

I am so thankful my daughter decided to have her wedding in Wisc Dells rather than Florida. I had figured a thousand per ouple with airfare and miotel, that was probably low, flying into Fort Myers.

Does this mean I can stop looking for Ft Meyers in May?

It's all relative. Just be thankful you don't have to pay over $2000 per person from Oz.

Yes, Lawren, you can stop looking. The hotel in Fort Myers Beach insisted that everyone who came to the wedding had to stay at the hotel and for a three night minimum, no timeshares for us. We had to sign a contract for all those rooms.
so we haven't set the date yet, but they you can look for Wisconsin Dells in the summer of 2007.

Glad she changed her mind. Smart girl more money for the honeymoon...

I've been seeing the Dells for 2007 for a while, this is all that's left. Bear in mind that there may be multiple, similar units available for a single check-in date. RCI will only show one even if they have 15 of 'em. If you really need them BOOK THEM or you'll be renting from Bruce.

The topic of this thread was intended to be flying, not fling.

We will still be flinging, but will not be leaving the ground.

Well, I should never say not.

Even though that fare has gone from a low of $128 RT last year to $492 this year, they booked 42 seats the first two days!

                      Folks really like the Mouse!
