  • Why?

In violation of my personal rule against non-descriptive topic titles, I ask a question that no one seems to be asking.

    Why?

Why mess with the Orange Lake formula for success?

For years we have been hearing on internet message boards how OL is the greatest timeshare in the world.

We've been told that it is the largest single-campus timeshare in the world.

We've been told that it has the greatest management team, always responsive to what the owners want, providing the specific amenities those owners want and not the ones they don't.

We've been told how owners receive every conceivable preference.

We've been told how immaculate and beautiful the place is, how responsible and responsive the maintenance people are.

We've been told about the great lengths the resort goes to to keep each and every unit in the best possible condition, even the oldest ones.

We've been told how warm, gracious and welcoming the Customer Service people are.

We've been told that OL has it's own Disney rep, right on site, and not one, but two shortcuts to Disney.

We've been told over and over that OL is the feather in RCI's cap. Again, with a rep right on site. We've been told about all the great trades, even offseason week trades, that owners get through RCI.

We've been told how owners use RCI to upgrade their vacations for a nomimal fee, as extreme as being able to give a studio in the clubhouse and get a beautiful, newly refurbished 2-bedroom villa.

We've never heard any owner complain about the amount of the annual fee.

We've been told how owners can't wait to get back to their home away from home.

For years we've heard that it is as good as it gets, the creme de la creme of timesharing. It seems like the perfect place.

    So, why?

Why bring in a new team and change that?

      A change world?

I guess I will keep adding words in the title.

Every few years, people's taste get changed. If they don't change, in a few year, they may no longer matters.

          Mr. Bum:

It appears that you will be the one we rely on for the facts, when you can get someone to answer the phone. I sense discussion of this by other owners elsewhere will be limited.

I only have one questions, the one that really affects me, and the 99.99999% of timeshare owners that do not own at OL.

What happens to owners who do not ante into GlobalAccess?

Do they just remain RCI Weeks owners, and use their week, rent their week, or deposit it to RCI Weeks?

                  Jim,

Since OLCC is simply launching RCI Points with a couple of enhancements, owners who don't choose to partake will be treated just like any other weeks resort that has converted to RCI Points.

Only time will tell how this program will impact current owners who like weeks exchange. It depends on how many people take the deal. I believe the $1295 price point is a mistake. Unless, of course, that is only the retail price that is discounted. If you buy from the developer, the discount is 100%. I am sure if you have a unit that a points owner needs, that they will offer you a great deal for converting it. OLCC is now in the supply and demand business for global access internal exchanges. So, they need to manage the supply of each type of unit in the system or owners will revolt. That's why deals will be made available for certain unit types.

My guess is that it will be a long time before current weeks owners feel an impact because the $1295 program fee will be a huge barrier to adoption. If however, they ran a year end promotion of $295, then they could get a lot of people to sign up just to do internal exchanges. Then, weeks owners could be hurt because only the bad weeks will be bulk banked into RCI.
