  • Speaking of OL

For quite some time now, even before GoGlobal, there has been talk about OL going it alone, leaving RCI and handling its own exchanges through some sort of network they would establish on their own.

Then, when GoGlobal was first announced, I went to my Inside Guy. He said that notion was a little strange in that OL had just inked a long-term agreement with RCI. He said anyone could see that all OL did was double RCI point values and call it their own point system.

Next supporting the notion that OL is not going it alone, OL came out as a RCI Points resort. Then the designation of two resorts within OL.

All the while, those doing searches keep posting about excess inventory available as far into the future as you can search.

Now, has anyone noticed that when they get to the sign-in page of RCI.com, at least for Weeks, that the picture being shown in the upper righthand center of the page is OL's West Village? It only stays there a couple of seconds, before going through a series of four other pictures, but if you refresh the page, there it is again.

Orange Lake, the lake, on the left, the West Village Clubhouse, the Golf Villas, the Resort Course, the trees on the right being where the tollroad is, and as it pans out, the Southern Magnolia Court highrises, the first buildings going in the west entrance, come into view, just before the picture fades.

Doesn't that seem strange for a company that is severing ties with a resort?

    Now for a conspiracy theory.

RCI wants and needs the mega resorts in Orlando. We know it is easy to trade to Orlando but most of America (and the world) still think "Wow, we got this great resort in Orlando". With starwood's VV leaving for II and almost all the Marriott in II, RCI needed a big save, they couldn't let OL leave.

So now for the theory; RCI makes OL a sweetheart deal. Lets OL do GoGlobal points, gets them on the front of the web site, lets OL breaks up the resort into muliple resorts, ect.

    What do you think?

My experience, going back almost to the beginning, is that anyone employed by OL that I have talked to has always had the attitude that OL is a feather in RCI's cap and that OL is in the position to dictate their desires to RCI.

I have always said that the tail wags the dog. Those working for OL have stood proud about what they bring to the table, the world's largest timeshare campus.

That goes back to the original Big 3, Vistana, Westgate and OL. As the other two made their moves away from RCI, my sense is that that emboldened OL.

As you point out, when you look at Orlando there are a tons of RCI resorts, but where are the creme de la creme now affilliated? Disney, Marriott, Vistana, Westgate (ooh, that hurt )?

It's a tough business and Mr. Seagull set the tone, started the slide down the slippery slope in 1990 or 91.

Maybe OL should work with RCI and up the trading power of their owners weeks? That would be a good benefit.

That's something that is likely mired in that secret trading power formula. My sources have always said that it can't be tweaked by an mere mortals.
