    Favorite nonDVC stays

    Okay so... we (DH,me,DS,DD-in-law,DGD age 8 and Grandma for a total of 6 bodies) want to do a Disneyworld trip next year. I have only gone once before and stayed in a DVC place. Spoiled us bigtime!! That trip was only 3 of us so the 1 bedroom was fine. Didn't have to rent a car used the Magical express thingy. This time we need 2 bedroom or some combo that will accomodate us legally. I have a strong 2 bedroom trader with my requests for DVC in place. BUT....I know those 2 bedroom DVC's are few & far between. So if we have to take a trade to an off site timeshare, what do you seasoned Orlando folks advise? We will be arriving by air. We are not that enamored by all the bells & whistles (fancy Dragon pool slides, state of the art exersize room, full service spa and free internet not needed.) We really prefer low-rise and easy access to Disney. We probably will not visit the other parks. We generally cook once or twice using BBQ and certainly appreciate a washer & dryer. All our exchanges to date have been 5star II so we do like the granite counters & fancy furnishings but our home is not exactly 5star and we like it just fine. Since there are what seems like a zillion Orlando area timeshares, I don't know how to choose some alternatives. Any input from others with a lot more experience would be most welcome!!

      Sorry, forgot to add that info. We use II and currently have two tiger traders on deposit; a 1/bd Sheraton Desert Oasis & a 2/bd Villas of Cave Creek. Both see lots of DVC & Marriott type stuff all seasons in Orlando. I'm not interested in summer or school breaks. Hate the crowds. We are partial to Christmas season, though. Love all the decorations. Grandma wants to go to Branson but thr kids won the vote in favor of Disney.

        I'm not that experienced as others(or most) on this forum but it sounds to me that any of the 2 bdrm marriotts would suit your needs. just remember that a rental car is probably a must and also by staying off disney property you will lose some of that " Disney feeling." (many timeshares IMO have alot of extra "bells and whistles" for a reason- perhaps to make a little extra $$ for
        the resort, which is not necessarily a bad thing.) If your ok with that then by all means find a nice off DVC property and enjoy.

          The Marriotts are all pretty great. We have stayed at Marriott Grande Vista and a three bedroom could probably pop up for your week. The newest units are really wonderful at MGV, but the older ones are the pits and the refurbishment is slow going.

          We absolutely love Cypress Harbour and have stayed there a few times, no one-in-four rules with II, so we take advantage of that resort whenever we can. As a matter of fact, we will be at Cypress Harbour in January again, checking in on the 7th.

          What dates are you going? Did I miss that information? Off-season, I would bet your Disney request will come through, so Cypress Harbour is available pretty last minute at that time of year. If you are looking at summer, that is a different story, you should grab a Marriott while you can.

          We really liked the International Drive resort as well, though I cannot remember the name. It is not fancy, but it is clean and nice. A Vistana newer unit would be nice too, Cascades and Lakes, I believe, but the Vistana Villages units are really grand and would be my choice.

          It is amazing what even a one-bedroom will pull in Orlando in the off times of year. My Gardens at West Maui popped up again as Five Star when I deposited it for next year, so it is pulling some pretty great stuff right now.

          By the way, my son and daughter-in-law are going to Angel's Camp tomorrow, the Worldmark there. They did look into the accommodations and the area and are actually happy about their choice. I am driving them to the airport tomorrow.

            I hate the rental car thing. We loved not having to deal with that the last time. Squeezing 6 people into one large vehicle for transport all week is not my idea of fun. We loved using all the Disney transportation, even the much maligned bus system. We just treat it like another Disney attraction. I'll never understand why folks get all worked up over a 15 minute wait at a bus stop when they think nothing of waiting over an hour in line to ride a plastic teacup. Anyhoo..maybe someone knows which resorts are close to WDW. I have no concept of locations or traffic congestion in the Orlando area. It's confusing enough to see all the different town names for these resorts. Kissimmee, Bonnett Creek,Lake Buena Vista? I would be really ticked if I was going to Disneyland and got a timeshare in Escondito thinking I was near the park!!It may all be a moot point if my dream 2/bd DVC unit comes through But I figure I better have a back-up plan.

              Thanks, Cindy. That's great info. I see a lot of Vistana Villages for next year and all the Marriotts & Cypress Harbour, too. Is Cypress Harbour fairly close to WDW? I like marriotts as a general rule but they are usually just so dang huge. And noisey. We really like the smaller places better.

              I think your son & his wife are gonna have a great time! The weather was fabulous today, sunny & crisp. The leaves are falling pretty fast but there is still a lot of Autumn color. The higher elevations got fresh snow Monday & Tuesday. They should go to Murphys and Columbia this weekend. I think both towns are kicking off the holidays. Our little town parade with Santa & the town tree lighting is tomorrow night.

                When making your choice, and distance from Disney is a concern, concentrate your search to Lake Buena Vista.

                  Thanks so much. That helps a lot. I'm toying with booking through Disney so I can guarantee on-site. But they have a 45 day cancelation policy so I'm just not sure I want to plunk down the $$ right now. Even using their hotels is pretty pricey! And we are so spoiled since we've started timesharing. Even if we only use the kitchen to open our bottle of wine, the elbow room is sooooo nice
