Mangrove Tunnel Kayak Drifts. Beginning the January 1, we will be offering a very special kayak eco-excursion. The Everglades has the largest mangrove forest in this hemisphere. Some of the most spectacular areas are very near Everglades City. Timed with a flowing tide, we launch the kayaks in a freshwater environment and move along with the water through creeks that are canopied by lush vegetation. Rare bromeliads and orchids line the walls of the tunnels in many areas, a multitude of birds are in the lakes, tarpon can be seen rolling in the creeks & the scenery is spectacular. These mangrove tunnels connect several lakes and eventually lead out to the saltwater via a tidal river. Most of the trip we are actually drifting along with the current with little paddling. At the end of the drift, we have a kayak transport boat waiting for us for the return trip to Everglades City. The cost for this very unique trip is $550 for up to two guests. Additional people are just $60 per person. Trips are limited to six guests and advanced reservations are required.

3rd Annual Everglades Kayak Fishing Paddle-In
This years event will be February 24th . Launching from Chokoloskee, we drift with the tides to a sand beach at the mouth of Chokoloskee Pass. Vickie will be serving her famous conch chowder again, but there will also be plenty of bratwurst, drinks and pastries. Once the tide turns around and begins to rise, we launch from the beach and drift/paddle back towards Chokoloskee with the tide. For those that wish to stick around, we will be having a fish fry at a local waterside restaurant. This is a fun, social event that last year had 70+ kayakers of all ages participating. The paddle-in is free, but we do ask for a donation for the Smallwood's Store Museum. Come join us ... you will have a blast and meet some new friends. Rental kayaks will be available.
Arrival of the WHITE PELICANS -- In November and into December, as the skies turn "blue and CAVU"(clear air; visibility unrestricted) we expect to see large flocks of white pelican descending from 10's of thousands of feet to settle into their winter grounds. These birds use the northerly winds behind the cold fronts to sail them south. Their spiraling decent against the blue sky is spectacular!!! The largest of the Park's migratory "snow birds" will be here most of the season, but their arrival is something special.
PEREGRINE FALCONS -- Recently around the Turkey Keys, we have been sighting these raptors while on the paddling tours. Most have been on the wing, flying between islands, but occasionally we spot them perched in the highest mangroves ... as long as the bald eagles are not nearby!
