I'm still trying to keep my thoughts in chronological order, and this one should have been first.
Originally we planned to drive. Then Allegiant started service to Tampa, with $69 fares, but the best full size rental car I could find was $1200 (Christmas and New Years).
Then plane fare went to $229, so I gave up the idea of flying.
A couple weeks before the trip I noticed plane fares back down to $69 to Tampa (still $229 to Orlando). Rental car rates were still $1200-plus, but I went to flyertalk and found some discount codes. The full size went down to $577.
So I booked plane and rental car.
When we arrived (10:30 PM). I hustled to be the first at the rental car counter, pushing aside old ladies and small children. I knew it would be hectic, since the counter closed at 11:00.
They only had two SUVs available for upgrade and I grabbed the Rendevous for an extra ten bucks a day. We wound up needing it. Four guys and four golf bags two days. Several to dinner other days. Four adults, two golf bags, two coolers and six pieces of luggage for a week. We could not have gotten all that in an Impala.
We arrived at 192 in Kissimme a little after midnight (three days before OLCC check-in).
Our extended family who did not fly but drove straight through instead arrived tired and cranky. While we were out doing our vacation thing the night of check-in, they were all asleep at the condo. Unfortunately, the tired and cranky seemed to linger into the week. They also arrived back home tired and cranky.
So, to each their own.
