  • RCI Wanted Our Exchanges Back

The night before we left OL for our second week, at a SW FL resort, I noticed the message light on the phone was flashing. We had been to Shells to eat and then to the hot tub and it was about 10:00 we I noticed it. We don't answer the phone when we stay there, so it the mesaage light had been flashing all week. But I had cleared the messages earlier in the day, so this was a new call.

The message was from a lady in that RCI emergency department, the one that takes care of problems when you can't get into a resort. The message said she was trying to handle an overbooking problem, but she assured me it was not our exchanges, but someone elses.

She wanted our exchanges for some one else who had been overbooked somewhere. She offered two two bedroom units at a better resort on the beach five miles from where we have two one better units. She said they would give us one of them free.

So, figure that out. If they had two 2-bedroom units at a better resort on the beach, why not give them to the person that got overbooked, rather than our two 1-bedroom units? Why even bother us?

She left a phone number without a prefix. I tried 317, and got some grumpy guy, then called it again thinking I might have dialed wrong, but got the same grumpy guy. Then I called the 800 number and gave the Guide in Mexico City the name and extension number of the person in Customer Service I was trying to reach. He said he could not connect me to the office in Indianapolis.

A Guide in the Phillipines said the same thing.

Finally some Guide somewhere got me connected with the person who had called me, but I got her voice mail. I left a message and our cell phone number, but she didn't call back.

The next day, check-in day at our SW Florida resort, I finally figured out the prefix was 877, and got the emergency department. I actually talked to the lady at the desk next to the lady I needed to talk to. I left my information for her to tell her buddy, who was not due in for another hour.

On our drive I got the call and the problem had been resolved. Guess what they did? . . . Yup, gave the other person the two 2-bedroom units at the resort on the beach.

    Strange.

I wonder if they actually rented more units than they actually had in the spacebank.

I know that is intended as a famous TonyG one-liner, but others have suggested that this is where the SW FL stuff is going. If it is I would like to knwo how it is being done, where they are listed.

There was an offering in the October Travel Agent magazine for 50,000 weeks for rent to travel agents for renting out. This coupled with the multiple RCI rental sites seems to be causing a serious decline in availabily for RCI members.

Tony, that is certainly an alarming figure and a reason to be concerned. But, like the false threat of WMDs, is it a reason to go to war? Is it verifiable by an independent source?

By being anal-rententive I am able to look back in order to look forward. Although I am not satisfied with what is now available in SW Florida for January, compared to what we used to get, I have not been able to put a finger on it, other than the likelihood that individuals acting on their own have decided not to deposit those weeks with RCI any more. Perhaps they have decided that because of the great RCI Conpiracy.

However, today for next January there are 59 Resorts on the Beach. A year ago for this month (January, 2007) there were approximately the same number. Two years ago for January, 2006, there were actually fewer, the lower 50's.

So where is the proof? The UN Inspection Team has not been able to find it.

Boy, that sounds someone else, doesn't it?

The ad was real. The fact that I can't get the resort exchanges I once got a few years ago leads me to the conclusion that RCI has redefined an exchange as taking member deposits and exchanging them into cash via renting. An RCI employee has confirmed the great increase in RCI rentals.

I guess because of this thread I heard from my crystal ball, which I haven't for awhile.

It said that the recent problems were caused by over-Spacebanking by a South Florida developer with a lot of inventory, with a kinda sharing of the blame.

It became a problem because of the practice of resorts not looking at reservations until a couple of weeks out. I know some don't look at incomings more than a week ahead.
