  • OLCC Stinks

    Literally.

OL, and for that matter most of Florida, has always had an odor. It comes from the reclaimed water that is used for irrigation everywhere.

But when we came out of our unit on Thursday night to go to the pool and hot tub, the stink was horrible. We had to hold our towels over our face, and everyone who was outside was doing the same thing, covering their faces. Everyone we passed was talking about it.

On the way back I saw an OL Engineering vehicle with a guy in it so I asked him what the stink was. He said it is Animal Kingdom and the Reedy Creek (Disney) waste water treatment plant, which is located on Disney property just east of the OL East Village. He said it is a problem they have always had, and when the wind is from the East, well . . .

More About - RCID - Reedy Creek - Waste Water

The Reedy Creek Improvement District in Florida is the immediate
governing jurisdiction for the land on the Walt Disney World Resort.

Reedy Creek is a natural waterway, the course of which runs mostly through undeveloped territory east of Haines City. Its flow, drainage, and destination have been altered over the years by human development: It crosses Interstate 4 and enters Disney property west of Celebration and passes between Disney's Animal Kingdom and Blizzard Beach, meandering north past the western reaches of the Bay Lake city limits and the Magic Kingdom.

Let us know when your next trip is, maybe we can get them to burn some old grass so you will feel more at home.

How prophetic you are. That happened 3 days before we left for Florida, and filled our house with smoke even with all the windows closed. We could not sleep the night of the 17/18th.

But that is a topic I am not talking about here.

I can't wait to go over to TUG and see if you started a thread with that title over there! (Sorry you had to deal with the stink. Hope it didn't ruin your day)

Knowing how spin is put on things like this, I bet the people at disney are telling people that the stench is coming from that timeshare over there.

Makes me remember looking at a golf course community and being told the landfill was shut down that adjoined it. Then we played golf and watch dump truck after dump truck going into the landfill.

JBL, we had the same experience once at Lehigh. It was awful, but only happened a few times, and always at night.

In my years on these forums I have always been proud of being quality speakers.

We have much experience with Lehigh, it being our annual January destination in SW FL before we owned a week that could see something else.

The last night of our last stay there some hooligans threw a tee marker through the big bedroom window on the groundfloor unit directly beneath us. It was in the middle of the night and it showered the Illinois couple sleeping in the bed with glass. Had it been me there (I am not suggesting that I would be in bed with the Illinois couple ), I probably would have also soiled my undies.

Since there is no responsible person on-site at the resort at night, it took forever for anyone to respond and it pretty much ended the night's sleep for everyone in our building, and our venture to Lehigh. We have never been back to Lehigh, the resort or the town.

The only place I've stayed that smelled bad was Cancun and that's near the lagoon sometimes but we always blame it on the Sunset people.
Of course home has it's own problems when liquid manure is sprayed on the corn fields and the wind is right. I remember when I first took the kids up here to look at this house when we first purchased it, one saying "does it always smell like this ?"

Speaking of home, when the wind is from the south we sometimes smell Arkansas. (notice, no smilie)

Speaking of Lehigh Resort, the paper reported that the Admiral Lehigh golf course has been closed down and is up for sale, probably to a residential developer but maybe to the county for a park.
