    Stayed at Ocean Palms

We picked up a 1 bedroom at the Ocean Palms building in the Fall of 2005 on a Last Call from RCI. When we got there we were pleasantly surprised that we were upgraded to a 2 bedroom. The Ocean Palms building is the fartherest from the beach, but the newest. Some of the units are on beach, but most of resort is across the road from the beach.

The following is from my notes:

Sea Gardens is 7 acres. There are 4 buildings and the resort has 4 pools. There is a video arcade, tennis courts, a tiki hut and shuffleboard.

Our unit was typical Fairfield. Nice but not plush and showing a little wear.

If you have any specific questions, I'll see if I can remember. We only stayed there for the weekend, so I'm sure others know more about it.

This resort was hit hard by Hurricane Wilma in October 2005. Here's what Fairfield says about the available units on its website:

      "Please note:
While the resort suffered significant damage during Hurricane Wilma (late October 2005), we have been able to re-open some units for occupancy in the following areas:
Key West, North Waterfalls, South Waterfalls, South Ocean View, Ocean Palms, North and South Cabana buildings
We are still determining when we will be able to re-open the North Ocean View building, which sustained the worst of the damage at the resort.
While the tennis courts are not currently available, we have made arrangements for resort visitors to play at an alternate location. "

Fairfield instructs owners to contact it to determine if their unit is available for occupancy.

FF points owners can book units at this resort. Anyone who has been here since October 2005, your input would be appreciated.

        Sea Garden

I stayed there a few years ago as well. The units that are ocean front are all studios (or at least they were). We had booked into a studio but they were in the middle of a refirb. so we were "forced" into a two bedroom unit. Ours was at the front of the main building above the hotel lobby and was quite large (as an added bonus I got to "borrow" their wifi) They had some planned activites for the kids (coconut bowling, a wild animal show, bingo... that my kids really enjoyed.) I will try to answer any questions you might have.

          Week Before Wilma

I believe I was there the week before Wilma, so all of my comments were prior to the hurricane.

The tennis courts were actually at Silver Thatch down the street. The last I knew, they were undergoing extensive renovation (post Wilma?).

We stayed at Ocean Palms a few years ago (pre Wilma). It was beautifully landscaped and the units were attractively decorated. Except for the fact that the lighting in the shower area was dim, we had no complaints.

The "view" of the intracoastal waterway from Ocean Palms is obscured by a building across the street. The only units actually on the beach are studio units on the other side of A1A from the rest of the resort.

There are two buildings that are directly on the ocean. As of yesterday, only one building is open but the unit we had was very nice, even though it was on the older side. It was listed as a Studio w Full Kitchen sl 2 but had a pull out sofa and a garden jacuzzi tub. They told me that as the bed was only a full size bed they considered it a sl 2 even though more could actually sleep there. The units with a larger bed would be a sl 4

I happened to notice in an RCI Weeks Exchange search list that there was no resort recognition icon (gold, silver or hospitality) next to FF FL. I'm guessing that it dropped due to the 2005 hurricane damage? Given Barb's comments, sounds perhaps like the units renovated so far may be of better quality than the non-rating the whole resort has.

We were there last year, just after the reosrt got "up and running". We were place in the Key West building, which is off to the left as you face the resort. The unit was okay, nothing fancy, with a few maintenance issues. We didn't report these, as the staff had their hands full trying to get the rest of the resort back in shape.

One thing we did find odd- the pools closed at dusk, which in February means mighty early! Luckily, Key West had its own little, nicely heated pool, so we slipped in after dark.

Same policy at the little resort we like in SW Fl, but we swim and hot-tub every night anyway. No one has ever said anything.
