Yes, anyone can see a launch. The second time we saw one was the morning before the wedding of my best friend's dd (the one who works at KSC). We all went over to her townhouse in the early morning (since it was a morning launch) and walked out to the beach near the house. We were able to get a great view, and the launch at sunrise was spectacular. Sorry, no pictures of that one.Originally posted by wackymother View PostLuanneComment

Ona recent Disney Magic Cruise out of Port Canaveral, the Captain 'hung around' so the cruisers could see the launch which was a few hours after the usual 5pm departure - they left ontime but stayed out at sea for the show.Comment

We have seen a few, including one we wish we hadn't.
The first was an early morning launch and we went out on an excursion boat from the pass at New Smyrna Beach. The Captain didn't navigate very well and we found that out when the helicopter gunship and the boat with manned deck guns turned us back.

Pat, just keep checking the site (it looks like you can also sign up to be notified of launches). Things can change quickly due to weather. The second launch we saw (the pre-dawn) one was delayed a day from its original scheduled launch. If it had gone on time we would have missed it as we weren't in Florida yet.

Y'all will love it. I grew up on Merritt Island in the 60's with the space program and still live in Brevard county. I still walk outside to watch each one go. The last night launch was amazing - first one in quite a while. Which reminds me of a local-flavor story....
I got a car pass and took some visiting friends out to the causeway about six miles from the pad a few years ago for a night launch. We were tailgating near the river. A lot of families were wading around in the water, splashing around, having fun with their kids. When the shuttle went up, it just lit up the entire area. Startled birds took off from tree roosts in droves. Everyone was riveted watching it go. We were close enough for the sound of the blastoff to just rumble right over us like a freight train. After about 30 seconds though, we started hearing a few startled cries, then a bunch of people almost walking on water to get back to shore. That's when we noticed about 100 pairs of alligator eyes lit up like flashlights all over the river!
