  • The Unsavory Side of Orlando

I have mentioned a few times before the unsavory side of Orlando--crime.

I guess we first became aware of it more than 15 years ago when the neighborhood around the resort we owned at, which is primarily modest rentals, became unsafe. We heard gunshots from just over the fence from the swimming pool during our last stay there, that being in the early 90's.

Of course, with so many children visiting from around the world, it is an attraction to child predators. You can google for the registered sex offenders website. I was alarmed to see how many registered sex offenders live in the same zip code as the West 192 resorts, the area near Disney World.

Here's the latest, at least the latest reported, but you know ugly stuff probably happens almost every day.

If we visit Orlando again, which after our last one this past Christmas week we have decided we have no reason to, we are careful as to where we go and when we go there. But, with crime being widespread and bold, you can only do so much to stay out of harm's way.

Crime in Orlando and South Florida is definitely high. You need to take care of staying away from the trouble areas. As with anything, if you use caution and good judgement, you will be okay.

Recently, I read in the newspaper that the FBI agents were helping fight gang crime in 4 United States cities. Orlando was one of the cities listed.

I think Cypress Pointe I is what that abbreviation stands for.

The crime in Orlando has always been shocking to us. We listen to the news at night and the crime seems much worse than Denver.

When we heard about the attack in Disneyworld, we were wondering if this was a hoax. Disney has security cameras and lots of eyes around. It doesn't seem like a logical place for crime. Plus, the bad guys had to pay for parking to get in! Unless they have annual passes, then parking is free. Hey, maybe they could match the fingerprints to the ones on file at Disneyworld. Just call me Nancy Drew!

When we were there this past few months, we both noticed that at every controlled intersection, a minimum of 1 car blew thru a RED light. I was the lead car in line and counted 3 cars flying thru a red light one after the other! We were very cautious with our driving there.

Well, the attack happened at Downtown Disney, which is really nothing more than a shopping center. Next to it you have Pleasure Island which is the night club scene. I don't think their security is as tight in those areas as the parks, because I don't think you'd ever see something like this at one of the parks.

I seem to recall an incident with a disney character inside the park.

The Magic doesn't stop the thugs

And one only a couple weeks back involving a small gang of kids and at least some shoving within the park itself (Magic Kingdom if I recall correctly). It CAN happen anywhere and thinking Disney (or Universal or Sea World or anyplace else) is immune is foolish. Sure they are "banned for life" but really, how tough would it be to get back in if they tried? No place is totally safe and more than ever being aware of that, listening to your instincts and using common sense will serve you well. Unexpected things, some potentially bad, can still happen but you will have done your best to avoid it.

That's a stretch, comparing Sin City to Fun City. Expectations are so much different.

A mugging and Sin City seem compatible.
