I'm not sure if this is "scene" or "good food," but for a change of scenery it's a short drive to Stan's on the water in Goodland.

Outdoor seating, live music, informal atmosphere for family and couples, good fish dishes and drinks. There's a competing restaurant in the next block that might be more formal; I haven't been there.

Here is a fun side trip.
Go to a couple of the State Parks along 41 on the way to hwy 29. Then go up Hwy 29 to scenic road Janes Parkway on the left. this is a 13 mile unpaved road through some wilderness. The way we did this is to drive way too fast to see any scenery and to ignore the pulloffs with trails. when you get to the end , don't turn back the way most people do. Go exploring. Turn left. keep going, ignoring the fact that the entire landscape has been burned by wildfires and there is absolutely nothing there. Ignore your gps which is telling you to turn around. stop at all the four way road signs though but keep going and drive over two canals. there are no road signs so you won't get any help that way. keep driving til the road just runs out. there will be an abandoned road grader there. turn right, ignore gps telling you to turn left. now you will go through an abandoned plated subdivision. stop at all 4 ways signs and try to figure which road will go through. stop and look at each road as far as you can. you will see that most just stop or are even covered with grass. no road signs on the street corners, gps is now stumped. you are still in the burn area.
Turn left if you can figure out which is 88th street. the street will end, but just drive over the boulders. don't be frightened when the road suddenly stops , go to the left, then go to the right, and just keep turning and going aroud rock piles. another field of boulders, just drive over it. keep driving til you get to another abandoned road grader and a huge heap of gravel. You have now been driving an hour. turn around and find the turn on this road to head west, in a few miles, the road will return to gravel, eventually you will see an abandoned trailer, and eventually you will come out on Collier Boulevard just south of Rattlesnake Hammock.

do you think we could get any takers for this adventure ride? We did this in a Cadillac Escalade too.

This sounds a little like the crazy non-roads we drive on the Big Island in a Jeep Wrangler. However, it's unlikely that I'd enjoy it on my own in my rented Ford Focus Perhaps another time!

Another good recommendation RK, I did leave that out for some reason but glad you brought it up! Stan's is another place to go on a Friday or Saturday evening.

I passed a place called Wylds cafe this evening. It is between 41 and the beach, past Vanderbilt right on Bonita Beach Road. I don't think it was open yet, it had some little tables outside, it was 4:30 and noone was there.

You guys are the best! Can't wait to try out the recommendations in the area but am passing on the explorer Jane suggestion.
