  • DISCOVERY BEACH RESORT & Disney's Old Key West Resort

The week of June 14, we have reservations 2 bedroom at Cocoa Beach and a Studio in Orlando.

We plan to spend four days in Cocoa Beach and three days in Orlando (II - AC, so figured it would be less than staying in a nice hotel, close, plus give us the WDW Timeshare experience).

Any recommendations on room request and which order you would do each resort?

We will be with our two grandsons, ages 7 & 5.

Also, does anyone know if they have high speed internet and if so, is it free or do they charge?

I believe all Disney Vacation Club resorts how have free high speed internet -- yippee! We always request "close to Hospitality House" at OKW so that we can walk to the main building, etc. Others prefer other areas for different reasons, so I'd decide what is important to you.

Do you call ahead to request, or when you check in?

I've heard conflicting reports about whether this is true for exchangers. A good friend of mine there did not have it comped in mid-May. I did during my Memorial Day weekend stay. I'm not sure which of us saw what was "supposed" to happen.

I know it is not comped if you are staying on a rental from Disney directly.

Some families with young children prefer lower floor units at Old Key West so they don't have to carry as much upstairs. Enjoy your vacation!

My wife doesn't do stairs very well, she has had double knee replacement. Do you call ahead to make your request of first floor, etc.?

I would call ahead with your requests, but re-iterate them upon check-in.

DVC does have free internet for DVC members, but I'm not sure that it's available for exchangers without a fee. If you're renting your unit directly from a DVC member, then you should have free internet as a their "guest".

I am not sure how it works when the reservation is a Vacation Exchange. If the reservation was made by a Disney Vacation Club member, the member would make the request for their guest. I would suggest contacting Old Key West Resort a few days before you arrive so they have an opportunity to accomodate your request (and save time when you check in).

Call DVC now with your requests - not all the buildings at OKW have elevators so it is important for them to know u have a guest who can't do stairs.

I have called 6 months before check-in with an II exchange,,,,

Yes, I would call now to explain that you can't do stairs. If possible, arrive early in the day for the best room selection. Some OKW buildings have three floors, no elevators, I believe.

I was at Disney's Saratoga Springs about a week ago on an II exchange; I was charged $9.95 a day for internet. You must have a credit card onfile to get internet service. I was trying to check my email before bed, at about 2 am, and had to go to check-in to physically how them a credit card so they could add it to my account and I could get internet access. (plus, they nearly couldn't even do that for me, because their billing computers go down from 2 to 4 am.)

On the other hand, they never charged me the $95 resort services fee; no idea why; I asked about it at check-in but they said it was owed on my account. I own DVC, but in the past I've always had to pay the $95 fee if I traded in.

Judy: I had heard that they were collecting the Resort Services Fee during your stay now. Interesting that they don't seem to have that sorted out entirely yet.

I am not sure how it works when the reservation is a Vacation Exchange.
Making a location request works the same way for exchangers as for Members. The exchange certificate has the details for the number to call---calling that, plus knowing your Disney reservation number on the upper right portion of the first page, is enough to get to Member Services.

are both exchanges the same check-in day?

Yes, we got one for our daughter and her family and they can't go, so we kept it and taking our other set of grandkids. We wanted to spend 3 days in Orlando, so I figured when I saw the OKW Studio, I would grab it and stay on site for the three days.
