    Thirsty,

Are you back? How was your trip? Unit? Any restaurant recommendations -- quiet/romantic/good food and/or good people watching/good food? Good dancing/clubbing spots?

    Philsfan,

if you still have the site map in electronic form, I would very much appreciate an email.

    Thanks

When we were there a couple of years ago, there was some mustiness, and as a result I thought that the mattress and pillows needed replacing, but other than that it was terrific.

DH and his buddy are just back from the Galleon. They LOVED it. Couldn't have been happier. They had a 2 bedroom (king in master and queen in 2nd bedroom), overlooking the marina, small balcony, etc.

I don't know if this is new but I did recieve a call a few days before check in date from the resort aking me if I had any requests. By then I didn't care what the 2nd bed set up was as the buddy had invited along another friend and they weren't sure how they were going to arrange sleeping so I figured I ddn't have to worry about. The point being that I didn't make a request so do not know if the asking was "for real" or not on the resort's part. Anyone one else get that phone call? Are they now trying to meet guests requests?

This is the 1st time I've heard of them doing this, calling you asking for requests & since they did ask you & ya didn't request any particular unit, look what ya got, the view with king & queen beds! I'd say this was very good but maybe it was due to the non-season, being slow & all of that.

Regardless, glad they had a good time in Key West & they got a great unit with the view of the Gulf!

The unit had apparently already been assigned, although I had no idea of this as my RCI confirmation didn't state a pre-assigned unit number. Basically I got the call (a woman) saying she was from the Galleon and she sees that I am checking in on Saturday.... do I have any requests. When I said no but that I had previousy thought I would be asking them for a unit with a queen in the 2nd bed but didn't need that anymore, she volunteered that the unit assigned had the king and the queen beds. I said great. And that was the whole conversation aside from a little chit-chat, us both living in South Florida. She was pleasant voiced and easy to talk to and at least gave the impression that she was open to requests. Oh, I just remembered, she did offer cribs and roll aways... this might be useful info to someone else here.

Maybe this is a new trend for the Galleon! This was "our" first stay at the Galleon and it made a great impression. The boys are eager to go back.

It sounds like unit location is still pre-assigned and fixed. That has been everyone's report the last ten years and they never replied to my emails concerning it.

The call my be coming from the ladies who do the little meeting at the beginning of your stay, where they try to sell you attractions and resales.

checking in briefly with my FREE Wifi, from our top (5th) floor unit in the D building with Marina view. We can also see a bit of ocean outside the marina.

Yes, the room was a little musty when we got here, but the AC had been off for a few days, and it's not even noticeable now. Fwiw, I am not in love with the Marina view --the noise from people working on their boats is annoying. But it isn't bad, and there isn't a thing here I'd really complain about.

We have the unit with the twins in the second bedroom -- they asked me which I wanted and I told them it didn't matter since we aren't using it. It'd be fine for kids, but a raw deal for adults -- the 2nd bedroom window faces a hallway, no view. It is dark, but quiet. I think the views vary by unit, I don't think it's uniform that the twins have no view, but I will try to find out.

The unit is very spacious. Decor is rattan/bamboo w/island prints, walls paneled in a light pickled pine, so a bit odd, but light and fresh. Kitchen fully stocked, not that we'll use it this trip. Great old photos matted in linen and framed in bamboo add a great touch. There is nothing in the unit I'd complain about. The furniture is fine/nice, the bed is comfortable. The patio furniture is brand new, and the floors throughout are new and done in a nice light tile.

The resort "beach" is a (bad) joke, but there is a great waterfront deck around the outdoor bar with lounges, it's too hot today to sit out but it looks great.

Today we rode around the island on a scooter and checked out a couple of beaches, tomorrow morning we have a snorkel trip booked. It's pretty dead down here (combination of season and economy), so we may have the boat to ourselves...

It's been twenty years or so since I've been here, I admit I am dismayed at how built up and touristy it's gotten. But still, it's beautiful, and hot, and I am a very happy Glitter

Ok, time to get ready for happy hour

Contrarily, one of the things we liked about our unit was the marina (Byte, or something like that), the noise and activity of the boats, yachts, tallships, and excursions coming and going.

Our best lunch was the day we got some fresh steamed shrimpies at the grocery store/deli across the marina, added a salad and fresh bread, and then sat on the lanai to enjoy it.

A major sailing race was to begin on our check-out day, so for the fews before it, the motored boats were moving out and the sailing boats were coming in.

Occasionally a Navy vessel would go by.

All that just seemed very oceany, appropriate for the setting.

It was fun to watch the tarpon, I believe, feeding on scraps from the fishing charters after they came in and were cleaning their fish.

There was a lot of wealth parked outside our unit.

I was at KW most of the last week but at Beach House, not Galleon.

For those who are going to Galleon, some local recommendation I received from the Southport Divers where I got certified for scube (they also take snorklers) are:

                      1. Alanzo near Galleon for happy hour 4:30 to 6:30 for half price appetizers and drinks.

                      2. Half Shell Raw Bar further down in historical port / Margret on Wed 6-9 for all you can each king crab legs for 19.99

                      3. Damn Good food take out across in the little courtyeard which I had an excellent blackened Grouper sandwich with fries.

                      4. Green Parrot for live music (might just be the weekend but definitely Sat and Sunday nights).

                      5. If you have a car, Hogfish Grill on Stock island is a very local place and great food.

                      6. If you are planning to cook seafood yourself, the guy for Pirate Seafood at US1 and White has a stand and sell both cooked and fresh seafood. He apparently owns a number of boats and sells to most of the restaurants in town and sells a little from than van. Florida lobsters for 10$/lb and Royal Red shrimps (raw) for $8.
Traveling Broadens the mind and I want to do more French Quarter Fest in New Orleans is my favourite festival
