And what I said in Post 10.

So, now that 3 people on the Internet have said the same thing, it must be true.

A lot of people are absolutely dazzled by Florida, especially if they come from an area where houses are really expensive. A few years ago, a friend of mine called me from her vacation in Orlando and said, "I'm buying a house down here! I'm going back to the realtor this afternoon to sign the papers!"

I was in the middle of a water park with an inner tube under one arm and my kids running around, and I'm on my cell phone trying to talk her out of buying Florida real estate! But at that time, a very modest house in our area cost at least $450,000...and down there, she could get a nice house for something like $125,000.

that must have been more than a few years ago. when we looked 5 to 6 years ago, prices were sky high. we had sold our Illinois, chicago suburban home and could not find anything comparable for the same money.

No, it was the year we went to the Wisconsin Dells--what was that, 2005? 2006? (That's where the waterpark was!) BUT it was an over-55 community, and the houses were pretty tiny. She didn't end up buying; cooler heads prevailed.
